Jane Reynolds born 1826/1827
« on: Saturday 20 April 13 11:37 BST (UK) »
My Great Great Grandmother died in Aston, Birmingham in 1887, census records 1841/1851 indicate that she was born 1826 and 1861 – 1881, born 1827.

She married in the Parish Church, Llandilofawr, Carmarthen in 1845. Her Husband George Norton was a Bachelor and Jane a Spinster, both were of full age, living in Llandilo Town. The record states that her father was James Reynolds he was a Hatter. Not noted as deceased but I think he died before 1837.

Places of birth on census returns are inconsistent:

1851 - Narberth, S Wales.
1861 - Monmouthshire, Newport.
1871/1881 - S. Wales,  Cardiff.

The only Jane Reynolds, which fits the bill, I can find in 1841, is living at Church St.  Narberth, with I assume her mother Anne, a Baker. There are 5 other children, it list's Jane as third eldest, she is the only one not born in the county of Pembrokeshire. However I think she may have been baptised in Narberth on 26 August 1841.
I have tracked most of the names on the 1841 census but no later connections emerge. Her mother Anne was in Water St. in 1851 and died before 1861. Jane went on to have 10 children in Ireland & Birmingham 3 of the names of those children appear with her on the 1841 census.

The question is where was Jane Reynolds born?

There is a gap in her parent’s activities in Narberth, from 3 May 1823, when Jane’s brother Thomas was buried and the birth of her sister Anne about 1828 but she was not baptised. The next baptism in Narberth was Elizabeth 24 July 1829.

Can anyone help?

Regards

Hello Colin,

I can confirm that it is your Jane Reynolds baptised in Narberth on 26 August 1841. The record states Jane is aged 15 and the daughter of James and Ann Reynolds, Hatter of Narberth. All the Reynolds children baptised in Narberth Church from 1820 - 1841 have their father James as a Hatter.

Interestingly, when Jane is baptised on August 26, there are 8 other girls and 1 boy aged between 14 and 21 years baptised at the same time.

I can't help with a place of birth, but South Wales  looks likely.

Regards,

You are right with the 1841 Baptism of Jane Reynold, age 15 years, daughter of James and Ann Reynold of Narberth. James was a hatter. Looks as if the Rector Baptised quite a few older children that year. It's almost impossible to say where Jane was born because it's before civil registration and she was Baptised at 15. There's census info to confirm place of birth but that is conflicting.  ::)

Have you found any clues from family members who lived in Newport or Cardiff, e.g. a brother of James or Anne?

Same post time as Rhosgoch  :D

Thank you both for your response, as far as I can tell James the Hatter and his wife, possibly Anne Collins, had the following children:

Benjamin Reynolds was born about 1819, Baptism: 4 February 1820 in Narberth, Pembrokeshire and died 1880 in Newport, Monmouthshire, he was a shoemaker.
David Reynolds was born about 1820, Baptism: 4 April 1820in Narberth, Pembrokeshire and died 1901 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire. A shoemaker in Castle St. Narberth until 1891.
James Reynolds was born about 1821, Baptism: 7 October 1821in Narberth. Moved to Middlesborough
Thomas Reynolds was born about 1822, Baptised, 30 April 1823: in Narberth, Pembrokeshire and died 1823 in Narberth, Pembrokeshire.
Jane Reynolds was born about 1827 in Wales, Baptised: 26 August 1841 in Narberth and died 10 January 1887 in Aston, Warwickshire.
*Anne Reynolds was born about 1827 in Narberth, married David Griffiths
      13 February 1858 in Narberth.
Elizabeth Reynolds was born about 1829, Baptism: 24 July 1829 in Narberth, Pembrokeshire.
*Charlotte Reynolds was born 1833 in Narberth, Pembrokeshire. Move to
                              Lancashire & married William H. G. Smith.

* No baptism record?

From your information this would seem to be the correct family for Jane. When she married in 1845, I quess she had left the family, she stated that she was of full age, that would mean that she was born before 1824, perhaps she told a wee fib?
