Finding John and Lizzie Gallagher after arrival in NY in 1910
« on: Thursday 02 May 13 06:54 BST (UK) »
Would love to know what happened to this couple after they arrived in New York from Glasgow Scotland in April 1910 aboard SS California, just a fortnight after their marriage.  John (my grand-uncle) born in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1884, was a bricklayer and may also have gone to Baltimore for work in that trade in 1905 (arrival aboard SS Caledonia); my cousins seem to think they may have gone to Canada, but I haven't been able to find anything in border crossings on Ancestry so far. John's father was also John, his mother Rebecca nee Weir (died 1902 in Scotland) and Lizzie's dad was Peter, a ship rigger and mother Elizabeth nee Gillespie. Would love to get some leads!   Thanks in anticipation

Passenger list says John was in the USA 1905 - 1909. The couple were heading to a friend in 1910, Samuel Smith 474 East 135 th New York. Final Destination also stated as New York.
Father John 6 Lennox Place, Dalmuir. Scotland.

Arrival date in the USA was 11 April 1910 and the census was the 15th April 1910  ???

Thanks Kevin and Sandra: I had the arrival,(a definite match, as the address matches that of his sister and father),  but not the final destination in 1910. Not sure about the age difference in the 1940 Census as Elizabeth was five years older than John according to the record of their marriage on 25 Mar 1910, although according to the arrival record in 1910, she was only one year older. Sounds promising though! Re the friend named Smith they went to in 1910, it was a John Smith, also a bricklayer who travelled with John in 1905 ... could be just a coincidence (and Smith is a very common name, of course). Thanks so much to both of you! :)  Helen

Looking at the image of the 1940 census - Elizabeth could be 61 years  ??? John 56 years - so the 5 years would be correct.

Great! Looks like we've found them. Wonder if they had children...the answers just throw up more questions. Many thanks.  Helen

Looking at the census 1920/30/40 it doesn't look as if they did have children.   :'(
