How do you find a grave in England?
« on: Friday 03 May 13 03:36 BST (UK) »
My ancestor George Horatio Weeks died in Medway, Kent on 20 Oct 1903, is there any way of locating his grave?

Also his son, George Edward Alison Weeks died Aug 1941 in Fenny Compton, Warwickshire.  I'd love to know if there is a picture of this grave also.
Probably some of their families would be buried with them.

Love your help, I really don't know where to start!!

Hello,  Sorry can't help you with grave locations however have you seen the England & Wales National Probate Calendar, index of Wills & Administrations?  Shows George Horation Weeks of 44 Maidstone Rd. Rochester died 20 Oct 1903 Probate London 14 January to Frfanklin George Hornan, house-furnisher. Effects 259 pounds, nine shillings and 7 pence.

Hi again,
If you have not already spotted this, there is a photo and write up about the Rev. Dr. George Edward Alison Weeks on the following

http://trinity.nsw.libguides.com/content.php?pid=216484&sid=1803087

As he passed away whilst being the Vicar at Fenny Compton, I would say it is highly likely that he would be buried in the churchyard however I am sure that a more experienced Root Chatter than me will come up with either better clues or answer.   ;D

Hi benanne

There is no central grave database in England & Wales so you need to search locally.

Medway council maintain 4 cemeteries in the area, you should contact bereavement services there to see if they can help further

http://www.medway.gov.uk/communityandliving/birthdeathandmarriage/deathfuneralsandcremation/burials/cemeteries.aspx

For future ref there is the 3rd edition National Burial Index available on cd but the coverage is patchy, FindMyPast has some transcriptions from earlier editions.

www.deceasedonline.com is a useful site, their coverage is growing but again is far from complete.

Fenny Compton Parish Council have posted contact details for the church here

http://www.fennycompton-pc.gov.uk/fennycompton-2357.cfm

The registers for the church may have been deposited for safekeeping and the current vicar may not have details of who is in the churchyard but might be able to point you in the right direction for more info.

Engineer Rear-Admiral George Horatio Weeks died 20th October 1903 in Rochester, Kent.
Late of 44 Maidstone Road, Rochester.
London Gazette, 31st January 1905

As he was baptised, and married, at St Margaret's next Rochester, that might be a good place to start?

Local newspapers sometimes publish death notices which would give details of burial place/cremation,so that may help.
