Ashlee,
It's quite sometime since I did any research on the 'Cope' line.

I never tried to follow Elizabeth Smith's line, because 'Smith' being such a common name.  I thought it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thomas Cope married a Sarah  unknown - date and place unknown.  Their first child was Mary Cope b.1800 - Gratwich.  Four other births to 1807.

Sarah dies before 1826 - place unknown.

Thomas Cope then marries  Ann unknown - two children born Alton Staffordshire.
Ann  & Thomas Cope died before 1861 Census were taken.

I still have quite  few loose ends to tie up for this family.

The marriage between George Cope & Elizabeth Smith was by licence, so a copy of the licence may give more information of his origins.  Doveride marriages 1574 -1837 are on this site from BT's

also there is a burial of a Thomas Cope at Doveride 16 Feb 1847 aged 62 but that would put his birth a bit later than yours.

Don't think that's the 1774 Thomas Cope's burial, as we believe he is in Alton, Staffs in 1851 (born Doveridge).

I think the Thomas who was in Doveridge in 1841 was the one who married Anne Marston  29 Mar 1810 in Doveridge.

Thomas Cope of Somershall aged 21 plus & Anne Marston otp aged 21 plus married by licence.

They had the following children  all baptised at Doveridge
Maryann 26 April 1811
Charles 17 Oct 1815
Martha 30 Jul 1818
Sarah 15 Sept 1813

There is a Thomas Cope baptised at Somersal 6 Feb 1785 to Richard & Esther Cope

Hi Carol, I believe that I'm descended from George, born 1802 in Alton, Staffs, to Thomas (born Doveridge 1774) and his first wife Sarah.

Looks like the 1847 Thomas burial is the 1841 Thomas in Doveridge.

Where did you see the Thomas Cope aged 60 in Alton in 1851? He's not on the 1851 I found on Ancestry.

The 1851 census says he was 75 & 60 in 1841 at Alton

Ok thanks. Just that in reply 13 where you list the 1851 census for Alton, there are 2 Thomas Copes, one aged 75 and the other aged 60. I was thinking there was another Thomas Cope to add to the mix!
