Anne Higgins on the Gilbert Henderson to Sydney in 1841
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 06:42 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to track down any details of the parents/family of Anne Higgins who travelled to Sydney on the Gilbert Henderson arriving September 1841. Her arrival certificate says she was aged 21, parents Martin and Anne Higgins, and from Waterford in Ireland.
Any suggestions as to how I learn more would be very helpful.
Thank you
Chris

Do you know Port of Departure for the Gilbert Henderson? :)

www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index
There is a Martin Higgins showing in the Parish of Affane Co Waterford.
www.rootsireland.ie  which has Baptisms & marriages for Co Waterford (a Pay site)

Because the dates you are looking at it is very difficult without more specific information as to location.

www.nationalarchives.ie for Tithe Applotments records which is showing a Thomas Higgins in the parish of AFFANE in 1826. :)

No, I've not been able to find out her port of embarkation on the Gilbert Henderson. Nor have I been able to even find its stops on the Sept 1841 trip.

Thank you for the tip on the Higgins in Waterford. I'll check out the site.

Chris

Welcome to Rootschat, Chris

Perhaps your question would be better on the Australian Board, but in the meanwhile, here's some info about the ship that fetched your Anne to Sydney NSW.

The Gilbert Henderson, (Tonnage 517)  departed from London 20th May and from Plymouth on 6th June, arriving Port Jackson (ie Sydney) 16th September.   It did not touch in at any other Port.

The NSW SRO holds the records.

Australia, New South Wales, Index to Bounty Immigrants, 1828-1842"

It states that Ann is  In care of Andrew English and family

Andrew English aged 27 gardner and Bridget English aged 24 general servant
Then under single females .. . .Ann Higgins  aged 21  ?? maid.
Its hard to read in some areas

Hi. Anne Higgins is my great great grandmother, so I have an interest in anything about her, and of course her husband, my great great grandfather, Francis Humphreys. I've traced them both back to their arrivals, and tracked down Francis's criminal roots (multiple convictions for theft in Shropshire) though not his parents yet. In the case of Anne, I now know (with your help) that she didn't depart directly from Ireland, but from either London or Southampton. I've got no idea now how to find her parents, so that's my next job. I live in the UK, so hopefully may have some better success at this end.
