JM please correct me if I am wrong (Normal) but if The William Bird is connected to The earlier Birds at Hobby's Yards then they were of Aboriginal descent then why are they on the ELECTORAL ROLE. I could have sworn that in those unenlightened times aboriginals could NOT vote?

Since First Fleet, any person born "here" was automatically a British Subject, regardless of where his/her parents were born.

Since Universal Male Suffrage introduced in NSW in 1858, Males aged 21 and over who were British Subjects were entitled to enrol.

A mention of William Bird an aboriginal in 1847 at Newcastle Court although employed at New England by Mr Denne Esq (under the heading NEWCASTLE)

A much longer article with more info about a different aboriginal William Bird who is applying for a run in 1861 but in Ipswich Qld     He was very enterprising - but too far away I guess  :(

There is detailed info and lots of photos relating to this family on Mundia, just search for William BIRD born 1890.   http://www.mundia.com/gb/

According to them, William born 1890 was the son of Betsey, who was born in 1866 the daughter of George and Georgiana.  The two G's emigrated from England in 1856 on the ship Herald.

If you do a google search for "Bird Trevor Derrick" you get a glimpse (couple of sentences) of  a memoriam notice in the Western Advocate - but if click on the link it isn't there.

regards,
