Thank you, JM and all for these great links!   I especially liked the one that included this 'news:' "Mr. Newland does not care whether His Satanic Majesty or the Angel Gabriel sits in judgment of him." ;D
Unfortunately, I have no further info on my Dohertys-- only that Mary said she was born in England, married James Callahan and had Annie in 1868 (the latter two events probably in Donegal, but I have found no birth or marriage record--YET).  That clipping is about a relative, though.  Annie (my ggmother) mentioned cousins in Australia.  One was a woman who was a writer, but that's all we know.  Whether she was ever published or what her name was, we don't know.  I don't know that Annie knew of the clipping and the (Lumber?) King of Rochester.  She and her sister who stayed in Letterkenny wrote every week, but neither saved the letters! :'(
So, I'm going to pursue this King of Rochester that you found, this Cr. (Councilor?) Doherty.  Are you guessing, JM, that his first name was James and he was the one transferring the license to his son?
Cando, would an Australian company's profits have been in pounds in 1886?
Thanks again!  I love the people on this site!

Rochester Lumber Company

Cheers,  JM

Mentioning news snippets not only from Australia and the profits of the Rochester Lumber Company are expressed in dol.  Dollars.

Cando

Cando, would an Australian company's profits have been in pounds in 1886?

Yes.  Perhaps you missed the news snippets not only from Australia in my reply.

I didn't miss it, Cando.  I know Australia uses dollars now, but I didn't know when they started to.  I now know it was only in 1966.  I live in Rochester, NY and our Rochester Lumber Company was started in 1909.  Several pages of google results showed no other Rochester Lumber Company, though there are several other Rochesters in the world.

Your profile is not complete and you didn't mention you country of residence on the thread.  Well you have learned a little more about the history our currency.

I cannot find a Patrick DOHERTY of the right age ie born c1832 arriving in 1852 in either the Assisted or Unassisted Records at Public Records of Victoria.
http://prov.vic.gov.au/index_search?searchid=24

Perhaps he arrived in 1855 as an assisted immigrant.

DOHERTY Patrick 20 years arrived Feb 1855 on the CONSTANT  Book 12  Page#53

The Victorian gold rush was well and truly underway by 1855 and the statement he arrived in 1852 and proceeded to Bendigo by 1864 doesn't make sense if he was digging for gold. It is usually accepted that the rush ended in the 1860's.

Rochester was gazetted as a township in 1855 and....

Rochester (via Rowechester) was named after Dr John Pearson Rowe, who had a hotel here before the township was gazetted in 1855. The Post Office opened on 11 May 1863 and the town was reached by the railway line from Bendigo (connecting it to Melbourne) in 1864.

Perhaps this is Patrick in Bendigo in 1861.

The Bendigo Advertiser  6 Jul 1861
A Mr. Patrick Doherty applied for a prospecting claim on Wednesday last, having discovered gold in Whipsnake Gully, about a quarter of a mile below the claim of Barnes, the prospector, but Antoni Harlovitch, who owns the next claim, has objected to this grant, having obtained more gold than Doherty since they went to work.

The Bendigo Advertiser 14 Nov 1868 - at Bull Street, Bendigo
CROWN LANDS SALE.
A sale of Crown lands was held yesterday at the rooms of Mr H. Mirks, Bull-street. There was a good attendance, and very fair competition for the different lots. The following is a list of lots sold :

Town Lots.
Rochester, county unnamed, parish of Rochester,
ln the township of Rochester, on the Murray River Railway, line.
Upset price £8 per acre.
Lot 1—2r 21 p ; Patrick Doherty, £5 10s
Lot 2—2r28p;
Thomas Heward, £5 8s
Lot 3—2r l3p; John M'Mullen, £7
Lot 4—2r; John Glover, £4 10s
Lot5—2rj Henry Colman, £4
Lot 6—2r; Patrick Doherty, £4
Lot 11—lr lp; John Colvin, TA 5s
Lot 12—2r 13p; Hugh McDevitt, £6 5s,
......and so forth.  Crown land also sold in other areas as well.

P. Doherty was the owner of the Victoria Hotel.
View across to the Victoria Hotel in Rochester which was first licensed in 1870.  I am unsure if this is the original structure - taken c1970.  It appears to have been demolished and the site is not occupied by a branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

This is a wonderful lot of info, Cando; thank you!
I'm trying to establish the link I think exists between Patrick and my gggmother Mary.  Patrick's mother, Hannah Gibbons, may be the key.  My Mary's daughter came to Pgh, PA to live with her aunts Ann and Kate Gibbons.

Is the Australia Death Index cited by ancestry.com different from the NSW site http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/bdm_fh/bdm_bdsch.html?  I found William Doherty and Patrick Doherty with death dates coinciding with the newspaper links you folks have so kindly provided, but a search on the NSW gov. site brings up nothing to match those.  The newspaper William is much older, and is on the NSW gov. site with parents Edward and Jane.  Can anyone explain, please?   Where are these 2?
Here is what ancestry has:
