O'Connor family Newmarket
« on: Monday 05 August 13 12:14 BST (UK) »
Am looking for any information about a Joseph O'Connor, his wife Mary nee Sullivan and their 9 children. In 1901/1911 census they were residing in Scarteen Upper, Newmarket, Cork.
Peter O'Connor was my Mother in law's father. Have traced him to England in 1930's and Mortimor to USA in 1911.
I have been unable to trace birth certs for any of the children except Mortimor and Peter.
Any help at all greatfully appreciated

Hello,

it's difficult with the births as the older children are in Galway and the name is quite a common surname.

These may be some of the siblings on Ellis Island site:
Joseph O'Connor May 23d 1901 to sister Mary in Chicago
Hanora O'Connor September 14th 1904 to Francis O'Connor in Transit House Chicago

You have Mortimer's to Mary Ellen ?

I wonder if this is her:
Mary E O'Connor 1906 returning to Chicago from Newmarket. The only bother is that there is a Bridget with her. Your Bridget's age is not consistent so maybe she went back and forth.

regards
heywood

Thanks for the quick response heywood.
I don't want to appear real thick but not quite sure if you are saying that Joseph  went to USA to meet/stay with his sister and the same for Hanora. Have I got that right?

Did Mortimer marry Mary Ellen? If so where can I find the details?
I found Mortimer on 1940 census with a child Michael aged 6 but no mention of a wife. Is there a free website with Usa records available?
Thanks again for your help

Hi,
Mary Ellen would seem to be an older sister.

I found the records here http://www.ellisisland.org/. It is a free site but you need to sign in.
I used advanced search with surname and Newmarket as place.
There are several so some are perhaps relatives or just same surname from the same area.
It is a really useful site and records after a certain year haev two sheets so there is a bit more information.
I found Mortimer going to Chicago so the others are the same.

Family Search has the census records for USA but most are just an index. I didn't check any one there.

Hope this helps but just keep posting. You could post on USA board with the info you have for USA - there are some excellent rootschatters there who may be able to find out more for you.

regards
heywood

On Ellis Island, Mortimer is indexed as coming from Roscommon but if ou look at the manifest, it is Newmarket. (The person above is Roscommon).

Mortimer is going to his sister Mary Ellen Ho..ke (can't quite read it)

Family Search has these people in 1910, although the dates of immigration for some don't quite fit.
It may be worth your looking at this.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MKCM-63D

If Mary Ellen is the right one, here is a death for a child:

There are a few references to different Mortimer O'Connors but here is one from Newmarket
