Thank you I know it's irrelevant but was just curious..!

Another thought :  maybe Harriet lied and said she was a widow because she had a child and needed work..!!! Wonder where he was in 1851..(I know, I read to many books  ;D) Just love a mystery!

1851 has a 10 month old nurse child in Reading called Thomas Purvey

But, if he was illegitimate, he may have been registered under his mother's surname?

True  but not his Christian name surely..?  James to Thomas?

I agree it could be James Appleton though  if this was indeed  her maiden name and not purvey ! ::)

I've just came across you request for help to trace James Purvey and though i contact you to say my great grand mother Gertrude was the daughter of James and Ann and would love to learn more about the purvey Family line.
