Thanks Ciderdrinker.

This is useful.

In terms of their marriage, I have checked every single Reading marriage on FreeBMD and nothing in terms of a Sophie or Jeannie that then links to the name Joly/Jolley/Jolly/Joley from a prior marriage.

I do believe he may have have married abroad, but nothing coming up on the RG34 index, but he may have been a civilian rather than a soldier, so it may only be recorded in a French/Belgian town...

Hi Mark

A possible lead on John?

Findmypast has (brief) military records for a John Reading born in Foleshill.

He enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 21 August 1895.

Age: 18 years 8 months
Birthplace: Foleshill
Current address: 24 Victoria Street*, parish of St Peter's, Coventry
Occupation: machinist (master is Mr Lean)

Unmarried, just under 5ft 6in, sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, C of E.

His record covers only his attestation (and his first 6 days as a private before the file was apparently transferred) - no subsequent service shown.

*N.B. 24 Victoria St was the address of the John W. Reading found in the 1891 census with his family by ciderdrinker earlier in the thread at reply #8: RG12 piece 2454 folio 77 page 7.

Thank you so much avm228.

That definitely opens up a new line of inquiry. However, I have read it is rare for the WO96 records not to list any further service - so it seems as though his military life was a short one. Do the find my past records list a regimental number at all?

My first look into the Warwickshire Regiments post 1895, shows a John Reading serving in Sudan and then onto South Africa - wishful thinking on my part! Regimental number listed as 4582.

The number ascribed to John on the record is D/5441.

The puzzling thing about it is that after recording "Attestation; [Corps] RWR;  [Battalion] 3; [Rank] Private; service 6 days 21.8.95-26.8.95 it goes on to say "To R. Warwick Regt 27 Aug 1895" - and that is the end of the record. I say puzzling because of course he was already in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

Anyway, there's no indication he was discharged, so I don't think it's safe to conclude his service was short. The attestation term was 6 years.

I got the death certificate today for Sophy Reading and can confirm she was born 1877 died 1926 aged 49. Her husband is cited: John William Reading, brick layers labourer. So it's her. Address: 41 Meadway, Stoke Heath, Coventry.

I have found a William Reading, who was a POW in World War 1. Occupation listed as bricklayers labourer. Just checking him out now. So far, I know he was discharged in 1919, in Coventry.
