Workhouse Baptisms - Louth
« on: Sunday 29 September 13 16:10 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if it as the habit of workhouses to baptise the children who came to them?

I have three children (aged between 7yrs and 12yrs) who appear to be shown in the Louth Union workhouse on the 1861 census and in August that year all three boys where baptised at the same time.  I know that their mother had died in 1860 and I cannot find their father (see post re Sharp Atkin).  There is nothing on the baptism record to give any information as to their current circumstances.

I found them on the microfiche of the  St James church, Louth  parish registers at the Lincolnshire archives.  All three are next to each other with their dates of birth next to each entry. The date  of the baptism is 4th Aug 1861.

OK, I see them now http://www.lincstothepast.com/Baptisms/498718.record?ImageId=126848&pt=T

It would be interesting to find out if the William SMITH aged 6 (bap the same day) was also from the workhouse. :)
