Missing Hern Family & Marriage
« on: Monday 30 September 13 18:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anybody help in tracing this family in 1861 and in 1881.

1871
Margaret Hern born c1837 in Shetland (Widow)
Children:
Mary Elizabeth Hern born c1859 Sunderland
Isabella Hern born c 1862 Sunderland
Stephen Hern born c 1867 Sunderland
John Hern born c 1870 Sunderland

They were living in East Street, Sunderland in 1871, but disappear by 1881, also no trace of Margaret or Mary Elizabeth in 1861.

Can't find a marriage between a Hern and a 'Margaret' prior to 1859, nor a death or remarriage for her after 1871!

Can anybody help?

Sue

Could this be the family in 1861?  Living at  71, Hendon Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland.
Edit - The wife is Mary Ann - not Margaret so may not be the one

HERN, James Married   30    Seaman M S  b Teinmouth, Devonshire
HERN, Mary Ann 23    b St Peter Quay, Northumberland
HERN, James 8 b Sunderland, Durham
HERN, Mary Elizabeth    2  b Sunderland, Durham

James Hern born 1832 Teignmouth, Devonshire was issued his Mates Certificate on 8 Oct 1861 at Sunderland

If the 1861 is incorrect then so is this

On this FreeBMD index here is a marriage of a James Horn to a Mary Wade in Sunderland Sept qtr 1856 10 462

Maybe wrongly transcribed and as above not Margaret!!!  I should delete it, but there is always the possibility she was actually Mary

You may have to send for the birth certificate of one of the children to get the parents names.

Hi All,

Thanks for your help and suggestions. It could be the right family that Kay has found, but I may have to buy son, Stephen's, birth certificate to confirm (he is the direct line).

Once again, your help is appreciated

Sue

Just as an afterthought, I did notice on the 1871 census, just above the entry for Margaret Hern there is also another Margaret from Shetland, Lerwick.  I wonder did the enumerator make a mistake and wrongly enter the same details for both women?
