OK, I understand now what you are getting at and I will have to obtain a copy of John James Birth Certificate in order to find out his mothers surname in order to proceed. This I will do, would you have a reference for the one who marries Bridget (Bridie) Hanrahan in 1913 as this is the right one as I know she, after being widowed went on to marry a man called Knight. I am truely most appreciative of all your time and advice. Thank you.

Hi Graham,

Yes, I saw that she married Mr Knight. It looks very sad, I think with the death of JJ and the birth of their last child.
Here is the reference for that marriage:

John J Hynes and Bridget Hanrahan
December 1913 Hartley Wintney volume 2c page 485

I can't see any reference to Bridget in censuses. I did see a death reference earlier which put her birth about 1888 and had the name Bridget Frances. I looked but couldn't find anything. There are a few in Irish censuses but if you are sending for that certificate, you would get her father's name.

I have now discovered that John Hynes was indeed a Military man from Limerick, well the county of Limerick at least. He was serving with the Royal Limerick County Fusiliers Militia Reserve when he joined 70th Brigade in 1877. On his service documents it states he married Julia O'Donnell on the 14 August 1871 (This made her 13 on marriage) However a registration of the marriage was found for St Johns Church Church, Limerick 1877, which makes things sound a lot better. So I do not have a Great Granny Smith it seems, but a Great Granny O'Donnell from Limerick. Thank you for all your assistance. Any other information at all would of course be most welcome. Oh and yes I have applied for a copy of her marriage certificate to establish who her parents were and what they did.
