2nd Boer War Memorial in Greenhead Park, Huddersfield
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 19:39 GMT (UK) »
I would welcome some advice on how to track down Private A PUGH of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, who is listed on the 2nd Boer War Memorial in Greenhead Park in Huddersfield?  He was listed on the memorial as A Pugh, but a now desceased family member said he was known as James.  He was also said to be listed on a couple of other War Memorials outside of Huddersfield.
His sister Lucy, daughter of Mary, was said to have been born in the Bishops Castle Workhouse in Shropshire, so we may assume that the family of Private Pugh were commers-in to Huddersfield.  I have a suggested date and place of death, but have no real means of proving if these are correct - January 6th 1902, at Middelburgh. Sadly, I do not have the usual information - working back through the generations to Private Pugh and his siblings.  If you have any tips on searching for Boer War casualties I would appreciate your suggestions.  I have access to the big A, FindMyPast and The G.but am lacking the experience of searcing military records for this conflict.

If you go into "Military Records" on FindMyPast and scroll down to "Anglo-Boer War Records 1899-1902", then search for A Pugh, you'll find his records there:  soldier number 1936, The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry)

And this also seems to be your man, on the Shrewsbury Boer War Memorial:  www.roll-of-honour.com/Shropshire/ShrewsburyBoerWar.html

Hello Cati
Thank you for your prompt response, and for the info from Find My Past.  Can you suggest any way of linking that particular death to the Huddersfield Memorial.  Originally there must have been some documentation to show that particular Pugh (possibly) enlisted in Huddersfield, as we see in later WW1 records.  From looking at the Census returns Pugh was very common surname in Shropshire/Welsh border areas, and several A Pugh's were listed in the conflict.  I am wary about assuming this is the man without some documentary evidence.  Hope that makes sense.

Just seen your second post - thanks again.  Is it common to be commorated on two different memorials?

This was the only A Pugh serving with the KSLI listed in the FindMyPast index.  I don't know if any fuller details are shown in the record itself as I don't have a subscription to the site.

Originally there must have been some documentation to show that particular Pugh (possibly) enlisted in Huddersfield, as we see in later WW1 records.
I have no idea whether there was any such documentation or whether it still exists. Perhaps the KSLI regimental museum might be able to advise you?

I've seen it several times, where there was a connection between two towns. The memorial in Shrewsbury would appear to be to the men of the KSLI, not to men of Shrewsbury who fought in  any other regiment.

His name may also appear on the York Boer War Memorial - link here, but unfortunately no names on the site:

Great minds... I was just looking at the image of the memorial -
Lived in Huddersfield - so on Greenhead Park, Huddersfield
Served in KSLI - so on Shrewsbury Regimental memorial
A Yorkshire man - so on Duncombe Park memorial, York.

Source - South African Field Force, JB Hayward & Sons.

I will follow up with the regimental museum.  Many thanks for your assistance.
