school in warwick rd, yardley
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 22:56 GMT (UK) »
I discovered my aunt was a pupil at a school in warwick road, yardley on the 1871 census. I was wondering what type of school it was, as she came from audlem, cheshire, and I'm not aware of any connection in that area. Any info would be interesting, thanks.

Can you give the census ref. no. or her name. & I'll see if I can locate it.
What type of school it was would depend on the family's circumstances & what age she was.

Thanks for the reply, her name was Ellen Buckley. As regards her circumstances, she was the daughter of a farming family - Richard and Elizabeth Buckley were her parents. I think they must have been fairly well off. On the next census she had married a Benjamin Kemp who was also a farmer.

According to the route the enumerator took the school would have been along that part of the Warwick Rd. marked.
So it would seem she was training to be a governess.

:) Thanks for that Jim, I do not know about anybody else, but I have become very curious as to her parents and what brought her and sister Jane, to this type of occupation, so this looks to be them in 1841:-

George Bywater 40 occ Auctioneer b Shropshire
Frances 38
Francis 15 son
Martha 10
Maria 8
Jane 7
Residing at Iron Bridge, Madeley, Shropshire

I appreciate that information, Jim, thanks. I'm surprised that she was training to be a governess, in a way, but I suppose young ladies' lives and opportunities were very different from today.
