Giles Family Essex
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 00:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, Im currently tracing my mother in laws family tree and they were led to believe that her father came from Romy Gypsies. Her fathers surname was Giles. They were told that his mother came from Romy Gypsie's, but we arnt sure if this is correct. On his fathers side the surnames are Giles, Radbourn, Barrett and Batten. On his mothers side I have the names Head, Banks and Warren with a head marrying another Head to. Wondered if anyone would be able to shed some light on this or even point me in the right direction.
Kind regards

Jen

This is some of the Information I have, I dont have much on the Paternal line more on the mothers.

Paternal line

Arthur Giles b. 1905 d.1981 essex
father-John Giles b. 1874 d. 1947 essex
mother- Eliza Radbourn b. 1871 d. 1952 essex

Grandparents

John Giles b. 1851 d.1914 born in berkshire but at death was in essex
Elizabeth Batten b. 1848 d. 1931 born in berkshire but at death was in essex

David Radbourn b. 1829 d. 1903 Berkshire
Harriet Barrett b. 1833 d. 1903 Berkshire

That is all the information I have on the Paternal line so far.

Maternal Line

Gladys Head b. 1907 d. 1973 essex

Parents were Edmund Head b.1878 and Nellie (who we think may have been born Helen) b.1879 both were born in wynenhoe essex

I dont have any further information on Nellie but I have traced back on Edmund.

His Parents were William Head b. 1856 wynenhoe essex and Harriett Head b. 1856 Wynenhoe Essex

His great Grandparents were Joesph Head b. 1821 d. 1888 and Sarah Warren b. 1831 d. 1877 both in wynenhoe essex.

I have parents for both of them, they were

John Head b. 1794 d.1863 and Elizabeth Banks b.1795 d. 1863

John Warren b. 1802 d. 1875 and Elizabeth Waller b. 1803 d.1881

as I said we are on the understanding that the maternal line is where the romay gyspy would be.

Grandparents

John Giles b. 1851 d.1914 born in berkshire but at death was in essex
Elizabeth Batten b. 1848 d. 1931 born in berkshire but at death was in essex

Maternal Line

I dont have any further information on Nellie but I have traced back on Edmund.

It looks like Edmund had the middle name of William

He married Nellie Bailey
Marriage reg FreeBMD
Mar qtr 1901
Colchester
on same page
(transcribed as) Edmen William Head
Nellie Bailey
4a 691

marriage cert would give father's name

Nellie seems to be (on various census) Nellie/Helen/Ellen
1901 census with her and Edmund is Eliza Bailey visitor 17 b. Lexden Essex

could she be nellie's sister

Possibly Nellie is Ellen on earlier census with parents Charles  and Sarah A

will post more later as I have to go out now

Hello, I have Daniel Giles b1806 Berkshire marrying Louisa Lovell b1813 St Giles In the Field London. Their children were: Jane Giles b1839, Lewis Giles b1841, Albert Giles b1843, Charles Giles b1845, Caroline Union Giles b1846, Matilda Giles b1848, Henrietta Giles b1859, Angelina Giles b1852 and Brittania Giles b1858.
I don't have much info on Daniel, but Louisa was the daughter of Thomas Lovell and Union Bosworth....that couple being a complete mystery to me!
Your john Giles may be a cousin ?
