Logan Family St. Helens England
« on: Tuesday 21 June 05 01:54 BST (UK) »
All I have on my great great grandfather is the following.

James A. Logan born March 14, 1839 St. Helen England.

He immigrated to the United States in 1849. His parents were born in Ireland. He had at least one brother named Michael.

Unfortunately I don't even know where St Helen's is located.
Any help greatly appreciated.

St Helens is in Lancashire.  It's a likely enough place for immigrants from Ireland to live.  Have you looked for a birth registration so that you can order a certificate?  Try FreeBMD or, if that fails, 1837online.  Registration of births was patchy at that early stage but you may be lucky.  How are you so sure of his birth date?  You could write to the local register office (Central Street, St Helens, WA10 1UJ.Tel: 01744 23524 or 732012) for the certificate with that information.  That would give you his perents' names.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi Tramco

Welcome to Rootschat

There are some St Helens baptisms for this time period on the BVRI2 CDs.

http://www.genoot.com/downloads/BVRI2/index.html

You can request a lookup on here in the Census Lookup & Resource  Requests by starting a new topic with the heading "BVRI2 lookup please" with whatever else you wish to add:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,48.0.html

The success rate may well depend upon the religion though.

Best wishes

Thank you very much. I have James Logan's Civil War record. That is where I got what info I have on him. I can trace him in the US but am finding it extremely hard to locate any info in England. I have tried the free BMD and bought credits at 1837. So far no results. I'm not sure even if he was Catholic or not. Can't find records to that.
