Thank you so much, Carole, for all your help.  Septimus married Mary Ann Grant 11 April 1881, and went to prison for bigamy 13 July 1881.  He's married to Hannah M in 1891/1901, but in 1911 he's a widower. He died in 1924, and Hannah M Machell widow administered his estate.  She died in 1943.

So Hannah was Hannah Mary Murphy.  Looks like she possibly married John Murphy in Middlesborough December qtr 1881 as Hannah Mary Smith.  In 1891 a Thomas Smith aged 19 is shown as a visitor

So although Septimus was free to marry in 1911 - Hannah was probably still legally married to John Murphy

Thank you so much, marthaannie.  This is very helpful.  Is there a baptism for Ronald Machell, son of John Henry & Florence, born 1920?  Are there any baptisms before 1920 for John Henry & Florence?

Thanks!
Bridget

Thank you again, Marthaannie.  I was wondering if perhaps John Henry and Florence had a child before Ronald whose birth wasn't registered?  It's odd that they married in 1915 and their oldest child wasn't born until 1920?

Hello BridgetM
No problem, I will check baptisms prior to 1920 for you next Tuesday.
I have found six newspaper articles relating to Septimus Machell's appearance in Court and have copied them into a Word Document for you.
If you would like to send me a personal message I would be happy to email them to you.
