1861 Census - Jones
« on: Saturday 15 February 14 17:29 GMT (UK) »
Request lookup in 1861 census for James Picton Jones born about 1857 in Newcastle Emlyn.   In 1871 and 1881 he was shown as step son living in Newcastle Emlyn with parents Henry (born in Newcastle Emlyn) and Sophia (born in Cenarth).   On the face of it Sophia would be his mother and Henry his step father.   I am trying to discover his father's (or possibly mother's) name.   I wonder if the name Picton is significant or whether he was named after the famous general of that name.

Thanks, Dave

Just discovered a marriage between Sophia Picton and Henry Jones in 1869 Dec qtr. in Newcastle Emlyn district.   Hopefully this could be James's mother.

Thanks doran54 and hello again.   I think our posts crossed there.   That certainly looks a likely candidate.   I wonder where the Picton came from.

Thought I was on to something there.   There is a marriage for a Sophia Jones in 1869, Carmarthen dist but she is listed with another woman and only one man between them and his name is not Henry.   Possibly this is her marriage but very difficult once one enters the Jones maze.

Thanks for the 1841 census.   Is there any chance of a peek at 1851?

I think the marriage for Sophia Picton looks good. Henry gives his occupation as tailor and he was a widower. Her father is shown as Picton, first name may be Lloyd, Henry's father Abel, also a tailor.
As Henry was previously married, possibly he had to wait for his first wife to die before he could marry Sophia, but she used his surname in 1861?
