How do I use information obtained from Griffiths?
« on: Wednesday 14 July 04 14:44 BST (UK) »
 ;) ;)

Hi

Every so often I trying to trace my Irish ancestors.  I have some information obtained from Griffiths (someone else found it for me).

My problem is (being slightly dim) that I don't know how to use the information I have.  I get very confused with Townlands, Baronies etc.

Could someone elxplain simply what this information tells me and how I can progress with it further.

Thanks

Jenny

This article on this website might help http://www.kinsella.org/genealogy/research/irjuris.htm

it gives a short explanation of the townlands and baronies etc... "Ireland is divided into four provinces. Each province is divided into counties; each county into baronies; each barony into parishes; and each parish into townlands"

Hello Jenny,

Donni's reply sorted your confusion regarding townlands, etc when using Griffiths Valuations of Ireland.
Here's are a couple of items which I find invaluable when looking at Irish townlands
1. IreAtlas Townland Search http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ -
2. PRONI Geographical Index - Glossary of Terms - http://www.proni.gov.uk/geogindx/geoghelp.htm

I'm wondering if you also sometimes get confused when you see the same Christian name appearing in several townlands. They may be different people but in many cases they may be the same people. Like the situation today, farmers in the 1800s may have rented properties from their landlord in several different townlands.

Best Wishes,

Christopher
