May Davies 1911 census
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 16:18 GMT (UK) »
Another relative I am stuck on....  :-\
When tracing my family tree I discovered a relative we did not know about.

Background:

19 July 1895 James Davies married Elizabeth Ann Williams.
They have 3 children: Trevor, William and Violet.
James leaves Elizabeth in around 1907 to be with another lady - Maria Jenkins (They go on to marry - even although I can not find record of a divorce, and they have 7 children).

1. Where could I find out if James DID divorce Elizabeth?

Elizabeth Davies nee Williams is a housekeeper to a Samuel Marshall in 1911. (Registration district:
Pontypool/ Registration District Number:586 / Sub-registration district: Pontypool / ED, institution, or vessel:24 / Household schedule number:8 / Piece:31919

And on the census there is also a May Davies who is 1 month old. I am presuming that this May Davies is Elizabeth Davies' daughter.
2. How do I find out who May's father is
3. How can I find out what happened to May?  ??? ???

The divorce records upto 1937 are on the National Archives site but Ancestry also has them upto 1911.

There is an entry for James Davies and Elizabeth Ann Davies in 1907, might not be yours though. There are names and addresses on file which you may or may not recognise.

Thanks Dawn, yes I saw that one. But it is a different James and Elizabeth. They live in a different part of Wales and did not marry until 1900, and no children until 1904.

If you get May Davies's birth certificate that might give her father. Looking at the census though and the fact that she is listed straight under the head of the house rather than further down under his children, I would take a guess that Samuel was the father.  ;)

looked at a marriage for may but there are to many to be sure which one.
to find her father you will have to get her birth certificate to be sure .
also  she is on a family tree with Elizabeth as her mother. shame we have to wait so long for next census to see her again :-\

Yes Groom, I thought that was unusual. Surely if Elizabeth was a 'lodger' and 'housekeeper' as she is described (albeit crossed out), she would be positioned under the children and not before.

So maybe to find out what happened to May I could look at the Marshall line and see if anyone connected there knows anything of May....

I can't see a marriage between Samuel and Elizabeth, but perhaps if there was no divorce she wouldn't risk remarrying as her husband did.

Am I right in saying that births HAD to be registered in 1911? I can't see on BMD a May Davies in the right district....
What reasons would this be?

Is there a place I can look for Mays descendants? A newspaper maybe, or a website?
