TWIGG family 1901 census Cumberland
« on: Sunday 09 March 14 14:36 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the TWIGG family in the 1901 census for Cumberland who were visiting from South Africa.
William born 1844 Ireland; Primrose born 1896 South Africa; Joseph born 1898 South Africa; Lily born 1893; Grace born 1889; Robert born 1888. (Could be other children).

I have the family in 1871 living with William's parents John & Mary in Frizington with William's sons John, George & William.

In 1881 William is with his 2nd wife Mary Sarah (Sloan) living in Arlecdon with children John 17, George 15; William 13; Elizabeth A 7; James 6; Mary 5; Thomas 4; Sarah J 3; Margaret 2; and Martha J 0.

I am not sure when they arrived in South Africa.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

So, Emily was born in Cumberland, registered Dec qtr 1883 Whitehaven

and baptised

4 Jun 1884, birth place Parkgate, baptised at St Paul, Frizington, father William, mother Mary Sarah.

Then Robert was born in South Africa abt. 1888. So the family moved out 1884-1888? Perhaps only some of them went.

I think most of them landed up in South Africa although records here a not that easy to find.
Sarah  seems to have married Lesley Louis LLOYD from Wales who died in South Africa in 1968.
Martha married Alex Leonard BJORKMAN and died in SA in 1970.
George born December 1865 died in SA in 1940.

William TWIGG seems to have died in 1903 in Kimberley, South Africa and his wife Mary Sarah in 1900 also in Kimberley.

Is it possible to see if there are any TWIGG children in the 1911 census living in Arlecdon?

Thanks

I have just seen this correspondence. My grand mother was Mary Twigg of Frizington, and we had many chats on her family She knew her uncle William who had migrated to South Africa, and recalled the big problem in looking after all the young children when William died in 1904 at Geldenhuis Deep/Jumpers mine. I have researched their family and there is major information including wills, birth details, marriage names, etc in the NAIRRS files at Cape Town. William is descended from John Twigg, born Butterton, Staffordshire in 1805. William was born in Monaghan County, Ireland, he had a younger brother Joseph born when the family was in Coniston at the copper mines, Joseph is my ggrandfather. He went to South Africa for short time with William. If interested in some more info I can help, we are probably distant cousins.
