Where in Ireland is "Boctown" (Bogtown) ?
« on: Sunday 16 March 14 20:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have an 1851 census entry:

Name: Patrick Mellon
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1822
Where born: Boctown, Ireland

I'm assuming this to be Bogtown (1822) but not sure where it is and wonder if it's near Donegal?

I'm hoping this may be a brother of my gg grandfather who's place of birth on 1861 census is Donegal.

I have read Bogtown in different places (all copied from online):

Bogtown (Ballyshear, King's Co.)
Bogtown (Queens Co/Laois)
Bogtown, Clonygowan, Co. Offaly
bogtown killeigh
Bogtown Part of (Articlare, Londonderry)

Hi Macbun,

Thanks for info.

I'm trying to narrow down places by process of elimination.

My gg grandparent's were from Donegal & Strabane.

Is Bundoran near the Donegal/Strabane border as it seems my gg grandad lived close to there having married in Clonleigh & Camus ?

He's the one from Donegal.

Regards,

Annie.

Hello Annie.
County Donegal borders the countys of Tyrone and Fermanagh.
I would say that Bundoran would not be that close to Strabane (approx fifty miles, thats a very rough guess). I think Lifford in Donegal county is the closest Donegal town to Strabane
Bundoran is very popular with people from Strabane and the surronds for a holiday.

hope that helps

Thanks Macbun,

I think I will shelve that one for the moment unless anything else turns up to point to that direction  ;D
