Places of Burial,in Towyn Merionethshire 1878 and 1888
« on: Sunday 30 March 14 22:19 BST (UK) »
We have a burial record of a Margaret Roberts d 1878 and buried 28 Nov 1878 by a Titus Lewis.  Her husband Jeremiah Roberts d 1888 and buried 17 Apr 1888 by Titus Lewis. Titus Lewis was the vicar of St Cadfan's Church. Can anyone suggest where they might be buried as their names apparently are not listed as buried in the churchyard at St Cadfan's?

According to the parish register, both were buried in St Cadfan's.

Regards,

David

Thank you David we shall be coming Dolgellau in early June for further research and we will come over to St Cadfan's to try again. Do you know if there is a plan of the graveyard at St Cadfan's to narrow down the search?

As dcbnwh, says the burials are registered in St Cadfan's Parish Registers, but there is no mention of either in Gwynedd FHS MI records; which suggests that either they didn't have a grave stone or their stone has deteriorated to illegibility.

Looking at Google Street view, most of the stones are slate and so should be legible. So, as Dolgellau suggests, it could mean that there is no stone.

The record office at Dolgellau has a transcript of the Tywyn registers. I am not sure if it covers that period but might be useful for earlier records.

Check the opening hours before you go - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/searches/locresult_details.asp?LR=220

Thank you very much Dolgellau and David for your help. At least we know that they are there.  Jeremiah worked as a farm bailiff at Faenol Ucha when Margaret his wife died in 1878 and he and his daughter were living in National Street when he died in 1888. It's possible that they could not afford a gravestone.  We've checked the opening hours at the record office and barring calamities they should be open when we are there.
