Evan HUGHES, Llanfyllin
« on: Friday 04 April 14 16:38 BST (UK) »
Evan Hughes, the Llanfyllin blacksmith, died 13 Dec 1823 aged 66 - so birth year c 1757. If anyone had access to memorial inscriptions for Llanfyllin, I'd be grateful to know if his is included. He was married to Margaret MORRIS.  I am not having too much luck as yet finding his baptism.  He may of course have been non-conformist so it will take some digging!

Evan Hughes the blacksmith will is on National library Wales website. All free to view. He left money to the Independents so your non-conformist idea may be correct. The ones I know of round there do appear in the parish registers.

Thank you Jackie.  Yes I was very pleased to find his Will - quite enlightening detail.

Having walked around Llanfyllin Church and Cemetery looking for Hughes and others of interest to my line and now sorted my pictures I'm sorry to say I can't see an Evan Hughes amongst them. The churchyard was cleared of most headstones sometime ago and I see none of my pictures are before 1862. Sorry.

Thank you for this as I don't think I had Anne's information.
I am coming up to Oswestry in about ten days time and hope to get to see Llanfyllin too.  At least you've forewarned me about the lack of older headstones for Hughes.  Maybe I'll come across an old smithy instead!
