Professional Footballer
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 09:58 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please answer me a football related question - looking for some information about a footballer called Wilfred Smith who would have been playing during the 1930's born Sheffield, family history has it he played for one of the Sheffield Clubs and he had FA Cup Medals (not necessarily playing for Sheffield) ---- can any of you football knowledgeable people help me please

I have found a Wilfred Smith born Sheffield 1910, but never played for Sheffield so I don't think he is the correct one

Also - this Wilfred Smith married in County Durham 1932
Many thanks
Sue

The 1910 born Wilfred has a Wiki page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfred_Smith_%28footballer%29

He's the only Wilf(red) Smith coming up in the Wiki list of "Sportpeople from Sheffield"? ;D

The only Wilfred Smith on either Sheffield club's list of former players was the one playing in the 1960's, born Wilfried Schmidt.

FA Cup Winners in the 1930's were:

1929-30  Arsenal
1930-31  West Bromwich Albion
1931-32  Newcastle United
1932-33  Everton
1933-34  Manchester City
1934-35  Sheffield Wednesday
1935-36  Arsenal
1936-37  Sunderland
1937-38  Preston North End
1938-39  Portsmouth

If that helps at all?! ;D

Tried looking in a few football stats sites and can't find a Wilfred/Wilf Smith playing football for a professional club. It may be that he was registered but didn't play first team football as stats not always comprehensive and only include players who played a  certain amount of games. Neither does he appear to be in the referees archives.

I'll keep looking but the Wilfred Smith posted by KGarrad appears to be the only one (and he isn't referenced in some of the football archives!). He did play his only professional game (for Blackpool) against West Brom who were the FA cup holders at the time, so this may be how the story unfolded.

You have a player who isn't registered on official sites but for fans of the club who are completists this is a gem!

Good luck
