Rev William Gorton
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 02:23 BST (UK) »
My 3x Great Grandfather was Rev William Henry Gorton, he was Rector of Chickerell and Vicar of Sherborne Dorset and died in Chickerell in 1830. He was born in Tiverton Devon in 1766, his father was David Gorton a Fuller of Tiverton.

We think his mother was Ann.

Can anyone help with tracking down, His mother for certain, and his grandparents etc.

I am in Australia and am limited to what I can find online.

Any help greatly appreciated. I have also posted this under Devon.

Hi
There is a baptism on Familysearch for him
William Gorton s of David and Ann Gorton at Tiverton 24.4.1766.

His entry under Cambridge alumni does confirm his father is David from Tiverton so this looks like the right entry.
Other children for the couple.
William Gorton 20.5.1752-22.12.1759
John 26.9.1759
Margaret 20.3.1762
Sarah 24.4.1766 (perhaps William's twin)
Mary 28 .12 1769
The couple seem to have married at Silverton 31.3.1749
David Gorton and  Ann Reed

Other records for him.
Turnpike trust for Tiverton has a mortgage for him and others in 1758 at the National archives.

At google books William Gorton age 8 s of David Gorton being sent to Blundell's school 15.7.1775-24.6.1780.

The freeholders list of 1783 for Tiverton (Devon record Office)
David Gorton fuller

David died in 1788 and his probate was originally in  the List of Devonshire Wills and Admins by the Bishop of Exeter. You may not know that the depositary was bombed during WW2 and the Wills destroyed weather a copy exists elsewhere,I don't know.
These are the entries for Gorton on the DEvonshire Will index project to look for copies of all Admin and Probate in Devonshire.

Apparently if there is a le in a column then there is no known copy in existence. As you can see that means there are no Wills known for Gorton but I thought you may want the list.

By 1798 and the National Land Redemption Tax the Rev William Gorton is renting out quite a bit of land at Tiverton.Other entries for Tiverton Mr Gorton,Miss Gorton and Jno. Gorton.

There will be a lot more at Devon Record Office but I'm afraid I live no where near.Yo can also find quite a lot by googling David Gorton of Tiverton.

At google books William Gorton age 8 s of David Gorton being sent to Blundell's school 15.7.1775-24.6.1780.

I have a contact at Blundells who has asked their archivist to look at what they have on his time there. One of the boarding houses there is called Gorton - possibly after him as he appears to have left them some money.

G'day Richard

Thanks for that.
I'm pretty sure that the house at Blundell's was named after Neville Gorton who taught there and was later Bishop of Coventry, but so far I am unable to find any link from my Gorton's to him. If your contact has any information though I would be grateful.

From the archivist at Blundells:

The entry in the admissions book states that...

William Gorton, [aged] 8, son of David Gorton, of Tiverton, Devon, [admitted] July 15th 1775.

Rather than leaving money to Blundell's, William Gorton was granted an Exhibition (under the term's of Ham's Donation) to Balliol College, Oxford University in 1784. This fact is recorded in the Great Order Book, the minute book of the Feoffees (Governors), where, at a meeting of June 29th 1784, it is noted that...

Ordered that William Gorton son of David Gorton of Tiverton fuller and John Burnard son of John Burnard of Topsham in the sd county of Devon gent. shall have the annual Dividend of the South Sea Stock purchased with Mr. Ham's Charity to be paid by half yearly payments from the Tenth day of October next during our Will and Pleasure

The Account Book records the following payments...

1785 18th October, Paid Mr. Willm Gorton one years Exhibition on Ham's Foundation due 10th October instant & stamp, £11 10s 2d

Simliar payments were recorded on 18th October 1786, 10th December 1787, and 23rd October 1788.

He has an entry in Alumni Oxonienses.

From my research notes when I was preparing A History of Tiverton, I also found that he was baptised 23.2.1766, ordained deacon 13.9.1789 and was then appointed Curate at Cadeleigh. Subsequently in 1798 he was Rector of Melcombe Regis, and later (1804) of Holcombe Rogus. He died 24.6.1830. In these notes I also have several mentions of other members of the family - including his father David and uncle William - would you also be interested in them?

Very little more than knew already, but never mind.

G'day Richard

Thank you so much for that.

I wasn't aware of the Exhibition so that at least adds something to mty bank of knowledge.

Yes I would love any notes you have on David and William.

I suspect that David's parents may have been William and Jane who subscribed to the oaths of Loyalty in Devon in 1723, but am still trying to confirm same. I will try and forward my Email by message.

Once again very grateful.
