There is information about his career on the Clergy of the Church of England Database - www.theclergydatabase.org.uk.  Browse persons under G and find him in the list.

Looks like he was chaplain to a Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland.

G'day Miriamkinga

The database is a little light on but yes he was Chaplain to the Duke of Cumberland and is mentioned in a number of letters from King George III, including a snippet that one of the Princesses says that his sermons are always interesting but his pronunciation is dreadful, I've also found a record of His Majesty stopping him to discuss the seasons preachers.

I guess one of the most frustrating things is that Rev William Gorton was so obviously reasonably well known but there is so little about his ancestry.

G'day Priscilla

Thank you I have been in touch with the author of the letter, the Gentleman in that photo is the Son of the William Henry I am interested in, I am descended from that man's brother who came to Australia some time before 1840.

Another interesting fact is that both William Henry Gortons married ladies with the surname Payne as did a William in the next generation, but so far unable to trace a relationship between them.

Old thread, but an update on the Gorton-Payne situation. Very interesting actually.

William G (no longer certain his middle name was Henry) married Patty P

Their son

William Henry married Susan P the daughter of Patty's brother.

Their Son

William Vernon G married the granddaughter of another of Patty's brothers.

Guess they liked keeping it in the family.
