Hi I am not sure if I have given enough information to go on, but I would be grateful if someone could try?

I am looking for Richard Powell, born about 1852 [in Talgarth - picked up from 1891 Census]. I only know his fathers name - William Powell.

The age is out, yet the father is 'right'. I can find no others to even near-fit.

How does the fathers occupation fit?

RG9/4223  Hay( Talgarth)  Fol   53

William Powell abt 1820  Llanspyddid, Breconshire, Wales Head   FARMER of 10? Acres ( & Travelling an entire forge)?
Elizabeth Powell abt 1816  Battel, Breconshire, Wales Wife
Richard Powell 13y, abt 1848  Talgarth, Breconshire, Wales Son
William Powell abt 1856  Talgarth, Breconshire, Wales Son
Joseph Powell abt 1861  Talgarth, Breconshire, Wales Son
Margaret Bice 11y, abt 1850  Llanspyddid, Breconshire, Wales Stepdaughter

Hi Pauline, thank you for this.
I think it could be the family, the fathers occupation of farmer would fit with the sons occupation in 1881 of castrator and surgeon - animals I am sure!! and would have been learned from a farming background. Not sure about the forge bit, unless it was for shoeing horses.

This gives me something to go on as it was a dead end until now

thanks again Pauline

Hello Margaret

Richard Powell does not appear to be listed in Breconshire in 1871.
Can only trace one born Talgarth in 1871. He is a lodger in Upper Machen Monmouthshire aged 22 and is an engine driver.
The only suitable Richard in Breconshire 1851 is listed below

BRECONSHIRE 1851
HO107  2491 19 30
TALGARTH
POWELL William, h, m, 30, haulier coal merchant, BRE Llanspyddyd
POWELL Gwenllian, w, m, 32, , BRE Llanfilo
POWELL Jennett, d, , 6, , BRE Talgarth
POWELL Richard, s, , 1, , BRE Talgarth
DAVIES Thomas, fl, w, 63, ag labourer pauper, BRE Llanfilo

The Stepdaughter in the 1861 listing  provided by Pauline is MARGARET PRICE.
In 1871 the Powell family  address  is Neuadd farm.
I think that Elizabeth Born Battle may have married twice,on each occasion to a William Powell .
The William  in 1871 born Cantref is not the one  listed in 51 and 61 born Llanspyddyd.
William born Cantref is shown below in 51 and 61

BRECONSHIRE 1851
HO 107 2489 559 1
LLANFRYNACH
UPPER RHIW

POWELL William, h, m, 37, farmer 45 acres, BRE Cantref
POWELL Mary, w, m, 40, , BRE Aberyscir, Upper Rhiw
POWELL Lewis, s, u, 5, , BRE Llanfrynach, Upper Rhiw
WILLIAMS Margaret, sv, u, 18, farm servant, BRE, Upper Rhiw

BRECONSHIRE 1861
RG9  22 4219 33 4
CANTREF
NEUADD

POWELL William, h, w, 48, farmer 60 acres, BRE Cantref
POWELL Lewis, s, , 14, , BRE Llanfrynach
WILLIAMS Ann, sv, u, 35, housekeeper, CMN Cilycwm
JAMES David, sv, u, 21, carter, BRE Llangamarch

Hello
than you for all your help and information. I think the Richard Powell I am seeking may be the child of William Powell of Llanspyddid and Gwenllian Davies of Llanfilo [1851 Census], but as you noticed Rhys, is linked via the marriage of his later stepmother [Elizabeth Powell of Battle] to the other William Powell of Cantref [1871 and 1881 Census]!
This lady seems to have been married at least three times as she already had a child described as a stepdaughter of William Powell of Llanspyddid [Margaret Price] in the 1861 Census information !!

thanks Rhys and Pauline

Hi. I have just found your post about Richard Powell. My tree includes William Powell neuadd, cantref. He had a stepson Joseph Powell, who was the father of a Nora Powell (illegitimate) her mother was also named Powell. Nora married an Edgar Powell of troedyharn, garthbrengy ,who I believe was the son of her uncle Richard Powell (the one you are looking for). Do you know about any of these and what happened to nora. I know that Joseph married and had other children.
Thanks
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne, welcome to Rootschat :-) and for the new information.

Yes, my Richard Powell is the son of William Powell and Gwenllian Davies 1819 -1852). I think William Powell then marries Elizabeth (widow of Kilwhibart) in 1859 and they have Joseph Powell in 1861. I did not know about Richard Powell's son Edgar marrying Nora, not that Nora was the illegitimate child of Joseph ! I have Joseph marrying Mary Jones in 1907

Then, just to confuse things.. the first William Powell dies, and Elizabeth re-marries William Powell Cantref !!!
