John McDonald and Flora McKenzie (of Whau Valley NZ)lived across the North river from each other in North River Bridge, St. Ann's Cape Breton. John is the son of Malcolm --- other siblings that went to Waipu NZ are Margaret, Mary , and Isabella.

I have more info if you are still interested.

Isabella was married to Murdock McLeod. they died in auckland but their daughter- dolina married John McLean. I am staying here in Waipu with their descendant- Lachie McLean. murdock's father was the Squire McLeod-- and many of his children went to NZ. Most of the books talk about the falling out with norman and Donald Squire who is either Mary McLeod's brother or cousin (Norman's wife) Squire was one of the first 7 settled in St. Ann's Bay-magistrate- merchant-  first 7 came from Assynt and were related --.  Margaret was married to James Fraser--Ellen lewis- john Fraser's brother- first settler but born in PEI. John fraser was the financer of the margaret. Above people settled in the Braighe- surrounding birdgrove farm in the same way they were surrounding each other in north river 160 years ago.
Mary McDonald  married John McLeod from other side of the Bay--  in englishtown he was known as a king macLeod. 5 brothers came together around 1820 and their descendants still live in st. Ann's...ellen lewis and settled in hikurangi.

Her father was Alexander (Mason) McLeod who settled at Whangerei Heads. I'm pretty sure John ( King) McLeod would be her uncle or great uncle. There were 5 brothers who came to St. Ann's circa 1820-- they got a Kings' grant of land and the one that married Mary MacDonald--- was John "King---
They were from Assynt as well "
Basically there were roughly 3 family groups that made up the 900 people who came on the 6 ships. It is what makes the story so unique. all of Cape Breton was settled this way because of the clearances- every part of CB reflected an area of the Highlands and the Hebrides. What was unique about this group is that they uprooted again and reestablished themselves in the same kin groups. Most were from Assynt/ Sutherland and Rosshire -- with some from skye/ mull etc... a few Lewis Harris people went but --- after these people left- they weren't related to the Harris Lewis people so the area was primarily Harris and Lewis -- St. Ann's North shore- after that. The McInnes were Rosshire or skye -- so young people broke the pattern occaisionally....
