WW1 Uniform
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 12:04 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if you can tell what regiment a soldier is in, just by looking at their uniform?  I've tried to find his Army records but to no avail.  His name is Charles George Carpenter 1888-1962, he was born in Romford Essex, but lived in Dartford Kent 1891-1911, and his occupation in 1911 was a Motor Omnibus and Lorry Driver.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

You cannot tell a regiment from a uniform if there are no insignia on view - as in this case.

As a bus and lorry driver he may well have joined the Army Service Corps but that is pure conjecture, judging by his boots he has just came from the field.
Newburychap is correct there is no evidence of his unit on his uniform.
Someone may be able to help from the medal card index rolls

There's a Medal Index Card for a Charles G Carpenter serving with the Army Service Corps Service Number M2/032199. It shows (if it's him that is!) that he landed in France 18th Jan 1915 and was awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British War Medal.

Thanks for all your replies guys.  Yes I had seen that medal card, but still can't be sure if that is the right man. I'll just have to keep digging.

Cheers

If he was still in the Army around 1918 he should be on the Absent Voters Electoral Registers. But his usual residence would have to known to find him,  If found that would give his army number and regiment.
