SIMKINS Ross, Herefordshire
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Was wondering if anyone could help ? or perhaps give me a push in the right direction.

I've been tracing my Fathers lineage for a while now, and have got further than before with the help of birth certificates and marriage certificates, but now I seem to have reached a rather confusing dead end!.

My Great Great Grandfather was William Peter Simkins b.a1870 I have census records for 1901 and 1911 aswell as a Marriage certificate for him and a Hilda Beatrice Hodges. On the marriage record he gives his father as Charles Simkins with the profession of Blacksmith.. heres the twist however, the only relevant record I can find for a Charles Simkins, is the 1871 England Census.  Where there is a William Breenan put down as a "nurse child".  I have attempted to order a birth certificate for my GG Grandfather but have not had any luck.. is it possible that he took the name of his adopted father?... this is a real mystery and would be a bit of a shock to my family if it were true.

Any help will be appreciated, let me know if you need more info.

Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

In 1881 William may have adopted the surname Simkins.  Transcribed as Jinkins but might be Simkins in the image,  so very possible he was adopted

Charles Jinkins     47    Blacksmith    Ross, Herefordshire,
Ruth    Jinkins Wife   48    Ross, Herefordshire,
Ellen    Jinkins Daughter 23     Parlourmaid    Ross,
William Jinkins    Son    11     Scholar    Ross, Herefordshire, England

Well that was fast!. Thank you both for the replies will have a look at the birth for William the 1881 census matches as I have his 'mother' and sister as Ruth and Ellen, and it was one of the census's I was missing.  It all seems to be falling into place know, a bit of a shock if true.  How likely is it that adoption records would show this?

Thanks again.

I don't think formal adoption records started until about 1927

Charles and ruth Williams  married in gloucester sept. quarter 1851, I cannot see many children from this marriage so maybe they did "adopt" later in life. They seem to have been in Monmouthshire at some point
mike

edit, Charles simkins born Brampton  (Abbots near ross) in shirenewton mon. in 1861

Just had a read through the Nurse Child thread.. I have ordered a birth certificate for William Brenin as per DORAN54's find as its the only likely candidate for a birth.  Thanks all.
