Where did this man serve ?
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 21:17 BST (UK) »
The records are on Ancestry.
James Hindle born 1885 Oldham.
Can anyone work out what he did, he was in the - Regiment Name: Army Service Corps.
Form Title: Short Service Attestation.
Document Year: 1915 Regimental Number: 424078
He seems to have signed  up twice.
I can`t make much sense of the entries, did he serve at home or overseas. What would he have done.

Thanks.

James Hindle was in the ASC Horsed Transport Depot Companies

Joined 665 Coy as a driver (665 Formed April 1916. Reserve Depot, based at Blackheath, London)
Transfered to 530 Coy (530 Formed September 1915. 63rd (2nd Northumbrian) Division. Remained at home)

This link explains more about ASC (HT)

Can't see that he served overseas.

He was medically classed as B2 so unfit for active service.
Remained in the Reserve until 1/7/18 when he was transferred & then re-classed C3.
No MIC for him so didn't serve overseas.

This will explain it :
http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/MedicalCategories.html

The BWM & VM only went to men who served in a theatre of war or served overseas 1914-19.

My grandfather was pensioned out during basic training, but he received the Silver War Medal.  Can't see one for James Hindle but may be something to do with ancestry's indexing.

Ah, interesting, so you had to be pensioned out for a Silver War Medal.   May explain why I can't find a medal card for my Great Uncle even though he supposedly signed up.  I'm assuming he must have been released unfit for service then. ;)
