Palmer Family in Orton
« on: Thursday 28 August 14 09:38 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out about the Palmer family, who were apparently tenant farmers in Orton from the 17th century at least through to the end of the 19th century, who also apparently lived in Orton manor and farmed the Orton manor lands. Specifically looking for records of Mary Palmer (born pre-1783) from there.

Hi

Can you include christian names of Mary's parents please.  First census is 1841 and Mary was presumably married by then so what was her married name
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Dear Carole W.,

All I know is that Mary PALMER of Orton was married by licence in Rothwell on June 15, 1797 to John WHITWORTH of St. Martin in the Fields liberty of Westminster, and they moved to live in Drury Lane in London, where she gave birth to 7 children by September 1810. I know no more of her after that, but by about 1812 the family seem to have moved to Turvey in Bedfordshire, where John WHITWORTH became a Watermill Miller on the Ouse. When John WHITWORTH made his Will on October 15, 1852 he was given as John WHITWORTH, Gentleman of Chellington (just north of Turvey), his wife seems to have a different name (either Charlotte or Roberta!!), and may have been another wife after Mary had died. She could have died in London or Bedfordshire. I know no more of Mary's parentage, but her family seem to have been tenant farmers in Orton. John WHITWORTH was a Congregationalist.

Thank you for this possible baptism for Mary Palmer in 1769. Does this index reveal other children to William and Ann PALMER? Ralph, Anne (wife), William, Sarah and Mary PALMER all paid Poll Tax in Orton in 1698, but I do not know if, or how, they are related.

Dear Sandy,

Thank you very much for this information on the PALMERs in Orton. It looks as if I am on a good trail, but I need some cross-cutting links, maybe Wills, marriage licence records or manorial records. Ironically the PALMERs are my daughter's maternal ancestors, but I am descended from George DUNMORE (1761/62-1831) of Cransley and Broughton. There were a number of DUNMOREs in Rothwell in the 17th and 18th centuries, many of them being shepherds, but I cannot see a direct link between this Ann DUNMORE and them, although a John DUNMORE, Yeoman of Rothwell had a Will proved on October 28, 1761.

I have found one link with the gravestone memorial of Mary Whitworth (nee Palmer) in Turvey, Bedfordshire, which gives "to the Memory of Mary Whitworth, wife of John Whitworth who died June 20 1843 in the 73rd year of her age", which would suggest she was born around 1769. Any ideas about the burials of her purported parents: William and Ann PALMER in Orton?
