Joseph Lawns of Hetton le Hole
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 16:16 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have a Joseph Lawns born circa 1848/9 and died 1908 at Houghton le Spring (Hetton le Hole). Joseph married in 1872 an Elizabeth Wilson, born 1851, died 1919 and had the following issue:

Margaret Lawns b1873
Robert Lawns b 1875
William Lawns b 1877
Elizabeth Lawns b 1881 d 1881
(John) Joseph Lawns b 1884
Elizabeth Lawns b 1887
Mary Alice Lawns b 1889 d 1891
Jane Ann Lawns b 1892
George Lawns b 1893

I can only find Joseph and Elizabeth on the 1891 Census and no other details for him apart from death record?

Any help with parentage of Joseph or other census details much appreciated! :D

The marriage would give details of his father  ;)

His marriage but can't find Elizabeth's name, there are two other couples under same reference, Isabella Ritson, Isabella Greenwell, George Render and Edward Young :-\:

Joseph Lawns

March 1872

Houghton le Spring
Vol: 10a   Pge: 522

I should read your post more carefully, you have already got Elizabeth's maiden name ::)

Unless there are an awful lot of coincidences here, I think this may be them under the wrong name in 1881 census

Joseph Bryan  32
Elizabeth Bryan  31
Margaret Bryan  7
Robert Bryan  5
Wm. Bryan  3
RG11; Piece: 4975; Folio: 50; Page: 24

Names, ages, occupations and places of birth match. I cannot find a match under Bryan for this family.

Matches this Joseph in 1871, down as Bryers rather than Bryan :

Downs New Houses, Hetton le Hole,
William Bryers, 49, Coal Miner, b. Chorley, Lancashire,
Elizabeth Bryers, wife, 46, b. Evenwood,
Joseph Bryers, son, 22, Coal Miner, b. Toft Hill,
+ 6 other children aged 11 to 2.
Mary Lawns, Boarder, wid, 78, b. Cockfield.

Also this Joseph in 1851 :

West Cornforth Village,
George Lawns, son 21, Unm, Coal Miner, b.Evenwood
Elizabeth Lawns, dau 24 (28?), Unm, b. Evenwood.
Joseph Lawns, son, 2, b. Evenwood.

Down as sons and daughters, but are in a separate household to the family above them, so I assume their parent(s) were absent.

I suspect Joseph is the son of Elizabeth Lawns, who then later married William Bryers, and Mary Lawns is probably Elizabeths mother.

Only problem is William Bryers appears to have married an Elizabeth Rawlinson. Trimdon 4 Mar 1854.  Both of Trimdon Colliery, Bachelor, Pitman, and Spinster. Fathers George Rawlinson, Blacksmith, and Thomas Bryers, Labourer.

Rawlinson - Lawns? Elizabeth Lawns from 1851 census does appear to have a father named George.

George Lawns married Mary Chaters, Teesdale 1818. Then 5 children to George and Mary : Ann 1819 Cockfield, Joseph 1822 Cockfield, Mary 1822 Cockfield, Betsy 1825 Evenwood, George 1830 Evenwood.

Would need some certs to confirm I think.

1871 neighbours of the Bryers are a family called Wilson, with a daughter Elizabeth.

A few family trees on Ancestry have Elizabeth, wife of William Bryers, as Elizabeth Lyons. No mention of their marriage, and the Elizabeth Rawlinson marriage is definitely the right one, so maybe came from a childs baptism, a bit closer to Lawns.
