The Cat, Upavon
« on: Monday 15 September 14 11:06 BST (UK) »
Does anyone remember The Cat pub on the outskirts of Upavon? My Grandmother stayed there in 1917, when my Grandfather was stationed at the Royal Flying School. I think it was still open in the 1960s but I think it has closed since then. I have had a look on the web but can't find anything about it. Can anyone help please?

None of the lost pub website have it on and there is ( was) a pub called  " something" cat ( Ah "Charlton" but that is in Charlton http://whatpub.com/pubs/SWN/158/charlton-cat-charlton , maybe it had a 'kitten' in Upavon :)

This gives you a good history of the area http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getcom.php?id=229

"I think it's just beyond Rushall"

Sign on the side of the building says "The Carlton Cat."

So I reckon that's it then, Malky. Rushall, Charlton and Upavon are very close together.

Many thanks everyone. Judging by the Google street view I think that is the place. It probably changed it's name from 1917.

Often referred to simply as The Cat, the Charlton Cat has quite a history. It was involved in the 1830s agricultural machine breaking riots and more famously with Stephen Duck. Googling his name  in conjunction with Charlton will tell you of the annual Stephen Duck Feast which your grandfather may have witnessed.
