Turbott (Turbitt, Turbett) ancestors from Westmeath
« on: Thursday 16 October 14 01:03 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for any information about people of these names associated historically with Westmeath.
It is an uncommon name, possibly of Norman origin in Ireland. The two connections I am aware of are the name Turbotstown, which appears to go back to the 13th century and is applied to both a homeland and a Catholic parish near Coole, and a John Turbett who held land in the parish of Castletown in 1659. There is also a homeland of Kilmacshane (Turbett) in Galway which may be connected.
Any help in tracing the origins of these names would be much appreciated.
