Australian Learoyd's
« on: Friday 24 October 14 06:04 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather 'George Henry Learoyd' arrived in Sydney from Yorkshire on the ship 'Moonta' on 13th September 1914.

Five days later on the 18th of September he marries a 'Elsa Gertrude (maiden name unknown?)
He probably met her on his travels previously being a merchant seaman.

They live together in James road, Waverley, NSW.

On 24th September 1915 he joins the 18th battalion of the Australian army  and dies in battle 19th may 1918.

The above information is all I have on him which begs the question;
Did he have any children in Australia?
What happened to Elsa Gertrude Learoyd?

Any help or leads would be most appreciated as I live in London England and haven't a clue where to begin.
Thanks :)

According to the electoral rolls, Elsa lived in Victoria from 1919 until her death.

Her death certificate would list any children.  Purchase online AU$21 and immediately download

Perhaps her Will may have more information

George Henry's WW1 war record has Elsa living at 2A St Leonard's Avenue, St Kilda, Victoria.
There are also other Victoian adresses listed in the record.

Have you seen his war record: http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/DetailsReports/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=7378971&isAv=N

Appears he was married before in England to Louisa Alice Hiley in 1903 with 3 children. His will nominates his son from this marriage as beneficiary.

Now this is strange.....   ???

There's a record for George Henry LEAROYD aged 67 who died in 1928 at Hawthorn, Victoria.
His father is listed as Edward LEAROYD, mother unknown.
Ref = 10404

There are no other LEAROYD deaths listed in Victoria between 1921 and 1985.

Ahh ... Nice to see that Dee is on the ball as I was failing to find her in NSW BDM. Incidentally your 1914 is the start of when birth information is restricted to 100 years so a search next year might just find a birth. I also failed to find a subsequent marriage for Elsa G Learoyd or Kuhn in NSW.

NSW BDM also indicates that there were already several Learoyd families living in NSW by 1914 so nothing will be too obvious. I searched Trove for anything in our newspapers and struck out.

You said he joined our army so that was next "George Henry Learoyd and wife Elas G ... Check this link

Good Luck ... Rob

There is the marriage of one LEAROYD in Victoria between 1921 and 1942.
Whether this is a child I'm unable to tell, but as Cando has written, Elsa's death certificate should give you the names of any children.
I can't put it on here, as there is a possibility it concerns living people.
