William Carolan: Donegal 1825
« on: Saturday 25 October 14 11:49 BST (UK) »
I have so little to go on that my appeal for help is a very long shot, but here's hoping that someone can at least point me in the right direction.

My great, great grandfather was William Carolan and is shown in the 1851 census as a lodger in Edinburgh as a 'carpet shoe maker'.  He is also shown as being born in 1825 in Donegal, Ireland - though it doesn't specify whether it's county or town Donegal.

In following census entries his children's surname has been corrupted to Carlin.  My Great Grandfather was known as Charles Carlin Cockburn (his widowed mother married a William Cockburn) and eventually Charles dropped the Carlin and was known as Cockburn, my maiden name.

I have carried out several searches but can only find him in Scotland.  Could someone tell me how to find him, or his parents, in Ireland please.  And if William was a shoe maker is it likely that his father was also a shoe maker?

I'd be very grateful for any help - thank you

That William Carolan born c1832- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTWN-9WL

Andy- have you searched for a death certificate in Scotland for your William Carolan? Have you birth certificates for any of his children born in Scotland? (they should show names of both parents and possible date and place of marriage so you would know where to start looking for a marriage certificate)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal

the name can be spelt:  Carolin and Carrolin

on the griffin valuation 1857 Carolin list under Kiteevoge (on the donegal site)

also when you go on this site come down the page and type in your surname/or shoe makers

also this site might be able to help you.

Hello - yes, I have quite a lot of info about him, that I should perhaps have included in my original post.  He was a lodger in Edinburgh in 1851; on 17 feb 1856 he married Mary Laurie (or Lawrie) (no certificate to authenticate): his first sone William was born 1856; his second son Charles (my great grandfather) was born 1858.  Because of other children born and the date of his widow's remarriage he must have died between 1864 and 1867.

I would be grateful if you could tell me where I could find, or search for, copies of birth and marriage and death certificates in Scotland please as I haven't a clue :(

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions- we were all beginners once and new resources are constantly coming online  :)

For Scottish certificates you need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, register (free) then start searching. If you find an item you wish to view you'll need to purchase credits. Lots of helpful information there and there's a topic here on Rootschat with lots of hints-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=562668.0

Also check out stickied topics on the SCOTLAND GENERAL (scroll down under the county listings)-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=84.0

There's also lots of links here under SCOTLAND RESOURCES (and the individual county boards also have lots of links)- http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=367.0

And now, if you aren't totally overwhelmed...
1856 marriage records give full name, age, marital status, occupation, usual residence, date and place of marriage, name and occupation of father, name and maiden name of mother, and names of witnesses and the officiating clergy.

1856 birth records - child (date, place and time of birth, full name, sex), the parents' names (including maiden surname of mother), father's occupation, name of informant and relationship to child. Unfortunately it wasn't until 1861 that parents' date & place of marriage was re-instated (as on births in 1855)

details included on death certificates-
