Could the service number be 53417 rather than 23417 ?

The medal card certainly ties in with the 1917 date  ;D

No problem here it is again:-

On what I wrote here because I just copied the info from the original and typed it in the same format as it appeared on the form where it say 8yrs 338 dys in the Colours/Army Reserve on the form there are lines in the Army Reserve part  which indicated to me that he spent the whole time in the Colours from 1908 until 1917.  I have been advised that his number indicates he was a regular soldier.  It is for this reason that I do not believe this is the right family having dismissed it in 2013 but when I asked for expert help it has been suggested that this is correct but I cannot see how that can be and I feel reluctant to pay for information that I had already already discarded. Although it maybe the nearest I have but am not convinced I can never ever recall my mother mentioning Wiltshire or Melksham or her father ever being in England prior to marrying my Nan (although he must have been for them to have met but possibly met as a soldier).  It is all such a mystery that I am failing time and time again to get to grips with.

This is the information taken from the original document which is my possession when  he George Robertson left the Army.

Yes sorry, I copied and pasted from my very original posting when I thought the first figure was 2 (although I knew it was 5 later) I failed to notice that when I posted it is now corrected.

I have a relative that in his civilian job was working on steam traction engines. The company he worked for were asked to send their machines to join the war effort to provide haulage. He "joined " the army because his engine was going and so he went too, coming back to his civilian job when no longer needed after the war. I didn't know until a few months ago that he had been in the army at all as I was always told that he was hauling straw and food during the war and assumed they meant on the farm not near the frontline !

Perhaps it may have been a similar situation for George where he was in the army because of [/s]the work he did as an engineer, and worked at the factory in Melksham and actually served elsewhere as well.

Added: Just realised if he joined up in 1908 that would not apply.
As you say something is not right.

Thank you for all your help.  I am still no further with trying to find answers I contacted the Wiltshire Family History Society using their online form must have been about 2 weeks ago if not longer.  Maybe they do not reply very quickly but I have received no response at all.  Therefore I do not know if able to assist or not.
