Hughes-Auchnacloy
« on: Sunday 16 November 14 07:58 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Hughes was born in Auchnacloy (rural) in 1867-1869 before marrying (1887) and settling in Church Street, Dromore pre-1901 census. His origins are vague but his marriage certificate states his fathers name was Patrick Hughes.

I have gathered enough data about his marriage and later life but I am keen to find links to his family life in Auchnacloy. Can anyone help?

Is his father on 1901 Census??

Hallmark, apologies but I should have noted that his father Patrick died prior to his sons wedding in
1887. This leaves many difficulties in tracing their roots considering that his mother is not mentioned on Thomas' marriage certificate and I do not know her maiden name.

...any potential Auchnacloy (rural) Widows on Census? Pity you don't know townland or does it just say Auchnacloy (rural)??

Hallmark, I really appreciate your efforts. I'm not sure. All I have been told his that he had a small farm in Aughnacloy. I will ask my wives uncle if he knows the area as he has visited the site many years ago. Thanks in the meantime.

The GRONI website shows only one Thomas Hughes birth registered in Clogher Registration district (incl Aughnacloy) in the period 1864-1870. The free search shows his mother's maiden name was McCloskey and £2 will let you see the full details on the website.  The family search website gives the details on this registration as Thomas born 11 July 1867 to John Hughes and Bridget McCloskey in Ballygawley sub district. This family are in Tullyglush town land in 1901, John still alive and Thomas unmarried, so its not them.

Several children were born to Patrick Hughes and Elizabeth Brady in Aughnacloy in the same period including Henry on 12 Jan 1865 and Patrick on 16 Dec 1866. Could Thomas be an unregistered birth in this family or even the name used by Henry or Patrick Junior in adulthood? £2 will let you see full details of one of these on the GRONI website and give at least a town land name to work with.

Thanks for that, I'll do a paid search.
I spoke to the grand-son of Thomas Hughes and he told me this morning.... "I had a look at the baptismal records in the church in Aughnacloy many years ago and as I recall there was a lot of pages of "Hughes" and granda's date of birth was there. "  He went on to say that Patrick had a sister who married a connection of the Hasletts of Clogher (they were Church of Ireland, Hughes RC).
