GARDNER Family of Northamptonshire & Leicestershire
« on: Thursday 20 November 14 22:49 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me find the family of George Hy Gardner in the 1911 Census please.  I’ve tried but so far without success!

1)George Hy GARDNER (b c1864 B’ham [shoe finisher, foreman boot finishing]
2)Spouse: Martha ____________ (b c1862 Chester            From Census 1891
3)Spouse: Amy ______________ (b c1871 London            From Census 1901
   i)   Gertrude GARDNER (b c1887 Northampton
ii)   Mabel GARDNER (b c1888/1889 Leicester
   iii)   Lily GARDNER (b c1890 Leicester/c1891 Northampton
   iv)   William Henry GARDNER (b 1892 Leicester, d 1942)
   v)   Spouse: Annie STE(A)DMAN (b 1889, m 1916, d 1977)
vi)   Elsie GARDNER (b c1894 Leicester
vii)   Sidney GARDNER (b c1898 Northampton

George appears in the 1891 Census with wife Martha at Poplar Avenue in Leicester but then in the 1901 Census he is with wife Amy at Grove Road in Northampton.  When son William Henry Gardner married Annie Ste(a)dman in 1916, their marriage certificate stated that William’s father George was “deceased” so presumably George died between 1901 & 1916.  There is a death of a George Gardner registered Q4 in 1901 in Northampton aged 37 so (if this is the correct George) presumably only wife Martha/Amy & his children will appear in the 1911 Census.

Although George was apparently born in Birmingham, the birthplaces of the children & the location of the family in the 1901 Census suggests that in 1911, they may have been living in Northamptonshire or Leicestershire (although second wife Amy was apparently born in London).  I have been told that son William Henry Gardner served in the British Army during WW1 & may have been in the Army before then, possibly in India.

If anyone can throw any light on why George died so young at 37 or what happened to first wife Martha, that would also be of interest.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi

Freebmd shows Sidney as Sydney William

Have you checked freebmd for a death for Martha and a re-marriage for George to Amy?

If George did die in 1901 - Amy may have re-married.  The cause of death can only be found by buying a copy of his death cert

Thanks CaroleW for your prompt reply.

In the period between 1890 & 1902, Free BMD has two deaths of a Martha Gardner - in 1896 in Wellingborough aged 33 & 1900 in Leeds aged 38 - which would fit from an age point of view with her approximate birth year from the census.  Wellingborough is obviously closer to Northampton so would seem to be the more likely.  This assumes she did of course die & she & George didn't just "separate".  If either of these are the correct Martha, how sad that both she & her husband George died in their 30's, leaving young children.  I wonder if Amy looked after them even after she re-married?

Assuming the death of a George Gardner in 1901 in Northampton is the correct one, FreeBMD has four marriages between a George Gardner/Gardiner & an Amy in the period between 1895 & 1901, but none in the Northampton area (they are in Ipswich, Stroud, Westbury on Severn & Bristol).  Although Amy was stated as his wife in the 1901 Census, I wonder whether they weren't in fact married!

The marriage of an Amy Gardner you have found in Northampton in 1904 could of course be the correct person in view of the location & date & would suggest the family might still have been in the area at that time.

Much obliged to you for your help.
