Abergavenny Lewis family - can't find in 1891
« on: Saturday 22 November 14 21:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi I could do with a bit of help please because I just cannot place this particular family in 1891, pretty please  :)

Right its Catherine Lewis , a widow (her husband was Paul who died in Abergavenny 1868.
The family are in Castle Ditch, Mill Street, Abergavenny in 1881 (Mill Street also in 61,71).

Catherine's year of birth fluctuates but it was around 1830 in Ireland - Cork most likely - and the children that were still at home in 1881 were Jeremiah (can't see neither in 91) b.1860, Paul b.1861 (but he's lodging elsewhere in 91), Mary Ann b.1862 and Ellen b.1864.

Any help would be great because I'm just drawing blanks x

When and where did Catherine die?

Mary Ann & Ellen could probably have been married by 1891 given their respective birthyears

Is this the 1881 entry as there is no Jeremiah in the household - he appears to be with relatives

I think there may be a few issues with ages of the children which may make looking in various census difficult.  You have Jeremiah born 1860, Paul 1861, Mary Ann 1862 & Ellen 1864, however:

1861 census:  Mill Street Abergavenny

Household Members:
Name            Age
Paul Lewis            34
Catherine Lewis   24
William Lewis      4
Jane Lewis              2
Jerimiah Lewis      1    Born 1860 Abergavenny
May Kerby            26    Born Ireland - sister to Catherine

1871 Census Mill Street Abergavenny:

Household Members:
Name          Age
Calethy Lewis   38    Born 1833 Ireland
William Lewis   14
Jane Lewis           12
Jeremiah Lewis     7   Born 1864 Abergavenny
Paul Lewis             6   Born 1865 Abergavenny
Mary A Lewis     5   Born 1866
Leyen Lewis     4   Born 1867 (note: this is Ellen, wrongly transcribed)

CaroleW  has provided the 1881 census where Paul is born 1863.  Jeremiah is not on the 1881 census with the family but this could be him in 1881:

1881 Census:

Name:                   Jerimiah Lewis
Age:                           17
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1864
Gender:                   Male
Where born:           Abergavenny
Civil Parish:           Brecknock St John Evangelist
County/Island:           Breconshire
Country:                   Wales
Street address:           "Barracks" Watton Brecon

Occupation:           Pte R.S.W.B. Militia

Can't find this Jeremiah on the 1891 census but if still in army he could be abroad.
Not had any success yet with 1891 census for other family.

On the 1901 census Jeremiah is born 1859 & Paul 1860.
