Elizabeth Butler
« on: Sunday 07 December 14 03:15 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking assistance to try to find the birth/baptism record for my GGgrandmother.
She was born about 1817 to 1821 in Braintree Essex. The information I have got is:

7 July 1846 Married to Thomas Davis, at Marylebone, with her age given as 29 on the marriage certificate.  Birth = 1817
1851 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 34. Birth = 1817
1861 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 41. Birth = 1820
1871 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 54. Birth = 1817
1881 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 60. Birth = 1821
1891 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 70. Birth = 1821
1901 census, birthplace, Braintree, age 80. Birth = 1821

The marriage certificate gives her fathers name as John Butler, grocer, deceased.

I have checked Family Search and FreeBDM, but to no avail.

Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

Civil registration wasn't introduced until Sept 1837 so her birth reg will not be on FreeBMD. You have to rely on parish registers up to then (and sometimes after also)
Have you considered this entry on familysearch.org
Elizabeth* Bolten? Butler?*
Christened 25 Aug 1821
at Stock, Essex
Father - James Bolten? Butler?*
Mother - Mary

Now whether this unusual entry indicates that Elizabeth was illegitimate or the writing was faded and indecipherable only ordering the original film from your nearest familysearch centre would tell.

Someone may have access to the parish records on SEAX or you can subscribe

The census gives Thomas's place of birth as Bradwell, which is about 3 miles from Braintree. There is no trace of a baptism for either Thomas or Elizabeth.

No trace in any of the surrounding parishes either: stisted, cressing, black notley, coggeshall, White notley, feering, Bocking, panfield, witham. Kelvedon, fair stead, terling, inworth, great braxsted, tip tree. The only place there were any butlers being baptised was Rivenhall. George, Hannah, Samuel, william, charles born to John and Elizabeth butler between 10/8/1815 and 19/2/1826. No sign of an elizabeth from 1810 to 1826.
Jamiesons, Martins and McGonigals of Coleraine, Londonderry
and
Cullens, Grahams and Challenors of Dublin county and city.

Thank you all for your help.

crisane, I had looked at that one, but dismissed it as Stock is the other side of Chelmsford to Braintree. Whether that means anything or not I do not know.

Jolee, thank you very much for your work checking the Braintree records. Having another look at the marriage record, you are quite right. Why I made that mistake i do not know :-[

olleym, thank you for that information. I had not realised that they were so close, until you pointed it out :-[

nannyj, many thanks for your work checking the other parishes.

I have not found, with any certainty, the 1841 census for Elizabeth. I have found 4, but two can be ignored, as they show her as a daughter, with different parents. The best guess i have at this stage is the one which has her at age 20, and a servant in Lambeth. Her husband to be was also working as a servant in Lambeth, so it is possible that they met there.

Again, many thanks for all your help in this quest.
