Cockayne and Burton of Derbyshire
« on: Monday 29 December 14 21:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am researching the Cockayne family of Derbyshire

Nathaniel Cockayne DOB 1749 married a Judith Burton. Judith Burton who was baptised Ashbourne 1768. Both were second marriages. Burton is the maiden name of Judith, her 1st married name was Palmer. She has used her 1st married name on her marriage to Nathaniel on 5/2/1798 at St Oswald's in Ashbourne.

Now if you cut and paste the following link you will see the researcher, an Andries Cockayne who researched the family history, has entered the Date of deaths of Nathaniel as 1804 and Judith 1839. I cannot find these anywhere.

http://www.cokayne.net/resources/AECM+stemma+6+caleb+derby+bw.jpg

I have noted that a Judith Cockayne married a Thomas Burton in 1808 at St Peter's, Derby. Assuming she kept up her modus operandi and retained her previous married name could this be the ex wife of Joshua Palmer and Nathaniel Cockayne? Was Thomas Burton a relative, distant enough that she could marry him?

Lastly I know Edward Cockayne, (DOB 1800) was Judith Burton's son. I understand he spent time in Market Drayton and there is a burial of a Judith Burton at Drayton in Hales, (which is near as dam it Market Drayton), 1837

Can anyone help me?

Regards

Eric

Hi,

A widow would marry using her married name - so as the widow of Cockayne would marry
with the name Cockayne.

Phillimore Marriages St Peter's Derby.

25th Feb 1808
Thomas Burton and Judith Cockayne of Ashbourne.  by Licence

No parish is given for Thomas, this usually indicates that at the time of his marriage he was
of St. Peter's Derby Parish.

You could check with Lichfield Record Office to see if the Licence survives:-

Thanks Spendlove.

'My' Judith, maiden name Burton, was born in Ashbourne in 1768. I cannot find another Judith Cockayne born in Ashbourne at a time appropriate to a marriage of 1808 so I think you have confirmed my Great (x4) Grandmothers 3rd marriage  :)

Now i am pretty certain that Judith's Parents were John and Sarah Burton. However, I cannot find a marriage for them. Guess I am going to have to do a bit more digging!!

Cheers

Eric

Hi,

On her first marriage Judith Burton = Joshua Palmer this is what Phillimore transcribed
from the Parish Register:=

St Alkmund's Derby
Joshua Palmer of St. Alkmund's Parish = Judith Burton of Ashbourne. by Licence

There is a possible marriage for her parents, which you might consider:-

John Burton = Sarah Cooke 14.11.1764 St. Werburgh's Derby.

Phillimore has:-
John Burton of parish of St. Peter. A serving man and Sarah Cook   by Licence.

http://ukga.org/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?action=ViewRec&DB=8&bookID=23&page=72&submit=Previous

There are a number of Children possibly born to this couple but only from 1777
20.10.1777  Joseph  St. Werburgh
3.12.1782 Jeremiah     "
28.9.1783 Elizabeth  All Saints.

So did they marry in Derby, move to Ashbourne then back to Derby?

Is this why your Judith has 2 marriages in Derby the place of residence of her parents?

Would check with Lichfield to see if any of the Marriage Licences have survived.

Thanks Spendlove

I will be visiting Lichfield RO in the near future.I guess the problem I have is that the John and Sarah mentioned had 3 children in 6 years(1777-1783), so I would have expected a few more if they had been married since 1764. I will have to remember to check the wills when I am at Lichfield to see if they can help.

Cheers.
