Hannah Shawcross, b ~1820 Stockport
« on: Monday 05 January 15 00:30 GMT (UK) »
I am having trouble finding birth etc for my 2nd great grandmother, she married Joseph Alsop (from Sheen Staffs) in Didsbury, Lancs 24/08/1840 (her father was shown as James).

However I lost them both in 1841 census, but after that from 1851-1891 Hannah gave her name as Hannah (not Ann etc), a consistent birth place and dates from 1818 to 1820.

Joesephs occupations seemed variable, but the other stuff in the census tie up so I think I am right, he was a draper in 1851, a potato dealer in 1861 and a furniture dealer in 1871.

Thanks kbrd86,

With Thomas Shawcross I was able to lead Ancestry to the Joseph and Hannah "Absap", all looks good except he should have been born out of county, but many of those in-county Y and N's in 1841 look ify to me.

I will try Thomas as a brother to help pin down Hannahs birth.

Stretching a bit, there was a Hannah Shawcross born in 02/09/1815, baptised in Stockport

Father: Jno Shawcross
Mother: Katherine Cash
Piece 0099: Stockport, Hyde Chapel (Presbyterian), 1810-1826

The ancestry image looks like it is correctly transcribed (except maybe Katherines maiden name) but the familysearch website has the same baptism with James for the father, can anyone see if that is a mis-ranscription or an alternate record?

Family Search has two records one with father James and the other John both with Katherine Cash as mother :(

Looking at the image on Ancestry it's John ???

Yep - that "Jno" does look pretty conclusively the wrong father. On Hannahs marriage docs her fathers names is clearly James.

The same James/John seems to have baptised a Thomas in the same chapel but with a different mother.

I guess someone with a 'thegenealogist.co.uk' subscription could say if it is mis-transcribed there.

John and James both seem names that someone writing records might have been expected to master.

Have you thought that as Hannah was married St James Didsbury it's possible she was baptised at the same church?
As far as I'm aware only the earlier registers for St James have been transcribed so if she was baptised at that church you will not find it on line.

Not for James, Sarah [Rogerson] and John Shawcross were busy, they baptized 6 there.

Thomas 1817
Elizabeth 1819
Ann 1821
Mary 1823
Damien 1825
Sarah Rogerson 1829
Alice Matilda Rogerson 1831

John at his marriage 8 Mar 1815 - Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George

Seems the wrong pair.

I was wrong Didsbury records are on line  :)

Thomas Shawcrofs 16 Nov 1817 at St James Didsbury
Born 22 Oct Baptised 16 Nov
Residence Heaton Norris.
Parents John and Sarah. John's occupation is book keeper
As Hannah's father was James and a Poulterer by trade can't be the correct one.
Possibly relations. ???
