Marchant/Jones family Dawley Magna
« on: Monday 05 January 15 16:01 GMT (UK) »
I would love to know why the surname was changed when the family moved to Pensnett.
21st August 1830 William Merchant married Jane Hayward Dawley Magna
Joseph Merchant son of William and Jane Merchant bapt. 30 September 1832 Dawley Magna
Sarah Anne Merchant daughter of William and jane Merchant bapt 30 September 1832
Mary Elizabeth Merchant daughter of William and Jane Merchant bapt. 1 November 1835
William son of William and Jane Merchant Jones bapt 1 July 1838. Only on this entry do they use Merchant Jones.
Thomas son of William and Jane Merchant bapt 18 January 1846
All addresses were Dawley Lane or Green William as a collier on each bapt.
By 1851 the family have moved to Pensnett Staffordshire and the name changes to Jones.

Joseph who is my 3x grandfather has his name as Joseph Merchant Jones on his marriage to Frances Oliver. Merchant continues to be used as a second Christian name for a number of the males of the family.

Any ideas why the change of name?
Vanessa

Do you know who William (the elder)'s father was - definitely Marchant, or possibly Jones?
