Townland Longfield
« on: Monday 04 July 05 03:38 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with information on Longfield in County Leitrim? My great great grandfather, Michael (O') Reilly is supposed to have been a native of Longfield (according to will dated 1851). However I have not found this townland in the 1821 Carrigallen Census. Might it be that that part of the census did not survive, or did it have another name in 1821? Longfield is referred to as comprising 148 acres in one reference that I have found. However, that and the location on a townland map is all I have been able to find on Longfield.

Hiya lewnox,

The Leitrim site indicates there was either a castle or a fortified mansion at Longfield. The Encyclopaedia of Ireland edited  by Brian Lalor does not mention the area. The AA Road Book of Ireland is no better. It might be worthwhile contacting the  Leitrim Library Service for further details.

All the Best, Chris
