Alice Edgley born Ramsey Huntingdonshire 1809c
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I am trying to find out more on Alice Edgley (or Edgely) born in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire around 1809/1810.  I do not have her parents name but she married William Clarke Born between 1805-1810 also in Ramsey.  They married on the 4 April 1834.  The had 3 children:

William Pearce Clarke in 1837
Anne in 1845
George in 1848

In 1841 Alice and William were living in Bythorn, 1851 - 1871 in Doddington. William died between April and June 1879 and Alice between January and March 1873 Reg. both in North Witchford Cambridgeshire.

What I am looking for are the birth or baptism records for both Alice and William.  I have checked all the parish records for Ramsey without any luck.  There were quite a few quakers in the area.
Also would be grateful to find their parents.

Many thanks

Aunty Jean

Welcome to Rootschat!

Are there any Edgley baptisms at all in Ramsey?

There are two male Edgley marriages in Ramsey
1802 James & Ann Whittlesea widow
1803 George & Alice Seekings widow

The only marriage that I can see of an Alice to a Seekings was in Ramsey in 1799, John Seekings & Alice Underwood. There's a burial of a John Seekings in Ramsey in 1801, but I have no other detail.  If this is the same Alice then it looks as though she would have been of child producing age*. But without a baptism it's pure speculation.

Who were the witnesses at the 1834 marriage - do they provide any clues?

David

*Alice Edgley age 57 was buried in Ramsey in 1829

Hi David
Thanks for your reply.  I think you may not have read the question correctly, I do have the marriage of Alice Edgley in April 1834 to William Clarke, its their baptism or birth records I am looking for.  I also made a mistake about their childrens names:
Anne     Born 1845
George  Born 1848
Sarah    ?

I also said that one of their children was called William Pearce Edgley but in fact, It was William Pearce who married Sarah and were the famous lemonade manufacturers in Scotland.

So again, it is just the birth or baptism of Alice Edgley and William Clarke both from Ramsey, Huntingdonshire I am looking for.

Many thanks

I read it correctly! The question was, in a nutshell: they both say they were born in Ramsey but there's no baptisms for them in Ramsey parish register where you've already looked, and you want us to find their baptisms and thus their parents.

If you've been through Ramsey parish register and there's no baptism for Alice c 1809 then you have a problem if in censuses she gave Ramsey as her birthplace. There's no baptism index for Hunts which makes it difficult if she was born in Ramsey but baptised elsewhere.

So I was coming at your problem from a different direction.

What I am trying to do is to identify possible parents for her via marriages in Ramsey. Of the two I gave you the one where the wife was Alice looks a possibility due to naming patterns. But in the absence of a baptism it's not going to be easy to prove that George and Alice were your Alice Edgley's parents. Which is why I asked if, when you went through Ramsey parish register, you noticed any other Edgley baptisms. If George and Alice baptised half a dozen other children with three of those being in 1809-10-11 then the chance of them being Alice's parents are reduced. Likewise when I asked who the witnesses were at the 1834 marriage it was to see if either of them was an Edgley; a possible sibling of Alice. You can then try to find who that witness's parents were.

Quakers kept immaculate records and tended to marry within the church. If they had been Quakers they'd have married in a Quaker Meeting House.

FamilySearch and the BMDregisters site both have a baptism for an Alice Edgley in 1823 (6th April)  in 'Peterborough, Northamptonshire'.
Father's name is William.
I appreciate that 1823 is not 1810, but many children born to non-conformist parents were baptised when they were older, and not as infants.

My Thomas a Becket transcript shows a baptism on 28 May 1809 of Alice Edgley born 9 May 1809 d/o George and Alice. George is a labourer.

The only Clark/e baptism around 1810 was a girl born to a single woman.  The next after that is a Sarah Ann born to Christopher and Ann of Middlemoor district. Christopher is a farmer

Hi - Thank you everyone for doing this research for me, it is much appreciated. Thank you again to David who I now see what you were trying to do.  I think that maybe Alice was a quaker as there were many in the area at the time, and that she was baptised as an adult.

Do you have a reason to discount the baptism of Alice Edgley in 1809?

The witnesses to Alice's marriage in 1834 were George Edgley and Ann Sansum.
George Edgley and Ann Sansum married in May the same year (witnesses are both Sansum family).

George and Ann continued to live in Ramsey, and have an older George Edgley with them in 1841, aged 65. I think that this would be the George Edgley who was buried at Ramsey in 1848 aged 76 (allowing for rounding down of ages in the 1841 census). The younger George Edgley gives census ages roughly consistent with a birth in 1812. (Except in 1851 when he and Ann are both 10 years older than they should be)
George Edgley born 5 August 1812 s/o George and Alice was baptised at St Thomas a Beckett on 23 August 1812.
