I noticed a that a sister, Ada, was also born in Ireland so this is a possiblity:
Ada Winifred Pentland Hall, July/Sept.1882 Cork registration district, volume 5 page 150

So now I have to  consider that Frederick snr was stationed in some barracks in cork at that time.  Any ideas please

I merely said that Ada born in Cork was a possibility. This record, of correct, would rule out that birth-
"Ada Winifred Pentland Hall was born in 1882.1 She was the daughter of Edwin Hall and Ada Georgina Shekleton.2 She died, unmarried."

The 1st Battalion of the 24th Foot were in Kilkenny from 26th September 1883 to 28th September 1885.

Ada Hall born 19 July 1881 Belfast registration district- mother Finn.
